Bush hog gear oil

I bought a new 8 foot bushog about two years ago. I use it to cut about 50 acres of tall grass every year. How often to I need to check or change the gear oil in it? Any advice of how to change it ?

If it doesn't specify, ask the dealer you bought it from...

My Woods BB60 Brush hog is 3 years old. I generally check the gear oil at the beginning of each mowing season, and maybe once during the season. During the mowing season, it's on the tractor frequently, and gets parked in a garage with a cement floor... this lets me quickly see (by any spots or puddles on the floor) if any of the seals are leaking. If not for that, I might check more frequently.

The area I mow is pretty rough. I hit a lot of stumps and rocks. If it was just grass/meadow without all the obstructions, I wouldn't check even as often as I do. (I'd rely mainly on the "puddle on the floor technique" to tell me when I was losing some)

Unfortunately, my dealer said he would mail the manual and never did.

I've heard of that happening lots of time. I'm sure they get busy and just forget.

If it's a Bush Hog brand you can go to their site and download the manuals for your mower.

I'm sure that some other mfg's allow you to download their manuals as well. Just do a search for the brand you have.

Some people run a double ought "OO" grease in gear boxes, they run cooler and do not leak when the box temperture is up. Also if your running the gear box on the higher side of the HP range it will increase the life of the box.
