After reading alot here thought i would ask about my bush hog.....Got a older 5ft bush hog i think its a razorback. got it used in 2007 have cut many times with no problems. I often check fluid in gear box, ect. about 2 weeks ago it started making a loud tapping noise like the blades were hitting the frame, ect. braced it up to get a look under deck and blades seem fine not hitting, spins freely best i can tell. DID NOTICE round stump jumper is VERY wobbly and you can rock it back and forth so blades may be hitting the top of the cutter. any ideas or suggestions? thank you all for a great forum!

When mine does the "blades wackin' the bush hog" it means time to tear it apart and rebuild the gearbox. usually only does it when you shut it off, and it's winding down. Last time i had it rebuilt it cost $1200. Should have bought a new gearbox instead of rebuilding it.

Also, if you have slip clutch versus shear pin, might want to make sure the slip clutch is working properly. I plan on buying one thru sweettractors for my unit.

Is the stumpjumper loose on the output shaft, or is the shaft wobbling in the gear box?

One is a simple fix

I recently repaired my BIL's 4 foot bushhog. Started out to just sharpen the blades, however when we pulled the blades and stump jumper off, I found that the weld at the shaft that held the flat bar connection for the stump jumper was broken completely off. This had caused the stump jumper to warp since if was then actually holding the blades in place. Removed all the bolts and sledge hammered the stump jumper back into shape. THen put a double bevel on the 1/2 plate where it welded to the hub and welded it back up with a 100% penetration weld. I also put some more weld on the other connection as it was very poorly welded. It is better than new now.

I think something has already come loose, it just hasn't come completely off of the gearbox yet!!

You won't be able to figure out anything until you tighten the stump jumper. Gear boxes on brush hogs rarely wear out if they have oil in them. Stump jumpers coming loose isn't that uncommon. If the stump jumper comes all the way off you will have a frisbee on steroids. It will slice off the bottom of your tractor tires and perhaps the legs of anything alive close by.

:shocked::shocked: Thats what I'm afraid of......Weather cleared up but I cant get the nut off the bottom of the Jumper :mur: sprayed it with PB try again tommorow. Oh I cant tighten nut either so I'm not sure if pan is loose on the shaft or its something else. I cant see much but blades turn freeley in all directions. if you grab the jumper pan it will rock side to side.
