Hey Guys! sorry to dig this thread up but i figured it would be easier than stating a new one since this thread already discribes my issue. I JUST got around to pulling off off the stump jumper today and the shaft is wobbling inside the lower housing im attaching a few recent photos in hopes I could get some ideas on what part(s) i need for fixing. B.T.W I did some more research and found out this is a Bush Hog Model 12. its pretty old but still solid and cut great before this happened and I'd love to get it cutting before summer. I think i found the correct gearbox diagram here

thanks again

I would suspect the lower bearings if there is no visible damage evident

Thanks for the QUICK response. There is no damage visible. I will open the gear box tommorow to be sure. I'm decent with tools and general repairs but I've never tore into one of these gearboxes. what's involved in replacing the bearings? would it involve parts (BEARINGS/SEAL) in this diagram i scanned? thanks again for your help!

Your first picture shows plenty of visible damage...the shaft is laying at the bottom of the opening. There's no bearing left inside there and the seal is gone. I'm not trying to be a downer but don't be surprised if the bearing races and a few other areas are severely damaged in there. I would bet that the lower end of that gear box is shot or close to it.

If it were me I'd replace the gear box.

Check the price of a new one but you can probably rebuild this one for a lot less.

thanks again not sure about new gearboxes as for what would fit..Anyone recommend a will-fit box I can just bolt on or would it be cheaper to rebuild?

I would at least get it apart and inspect it very closely before making any decisions. If it looks repairable, then price the parts and while you are at it, price some new boxes (that will drop right in). That should tell you which way to go.

As hightechtTed stated, it looks like the entire bottom bearing is gone, that would certainly allow the shaft to wobble. The problem is that if it was wobbling bad enough, it was also beating up the gearbox housing and the shaft. It might just be that neither a bearing nor a seal will fit snug now, but you won't know until get it apart. Good luck.....

Dont know how long bearing was shot but i remember cutting with it and the next day it started the noise and i shut it off and have not used it since. I Got it apart today and I dont know 100% what i'm looking for in terms of damage so I cleaned off grease to get a few pictures in hopes ya'll could give me some further input. Did pull out a tangled piece of metal thats pictured with the output shaft. thanks again to everyone for your help.

Found a new set of BH seals and Bearings for 40$. I have a detailed diagram but i'm not sure exactly how to install them? does the seal drop in from the top of the housing or press onto the bottom? as for the missing bearing I'm guessing it goes in spot A or B (See pict below) EITHER spot would require removing the nut and gear correct? thanks for any input! this site is a great resource!
