Bush or Gore

Do you shy Tractorbynetians have any opinions as to who should be our next beloved POTUS?

I am creating this topic because of the responses I have just gotten to my lengthy denoument post on the Post-Purchase Depression thread. Three regulars ignored all the tractor-related stuff and immediately pounced on a very oblique reference I made to Al Gore's reputation for veracity and exaggeration--and then pounced even worse on the VPOTUS.

Well, lets get right to it. Which guy do the tractorpeople want, and why? Maybe our responses will divide along color lines--ie, green, orange, red and blue.

I'll lay my cards on the table. I don't think too much of Bush as having presidential qualifications, but I affirmatively dislike Gore. I won't vote for anyone who has wanted to be President since he was an embryo, whose only goal in life is to acquire and maintain political power, and who will say almost anything to accomplish that goal. Of course, my dislike for Gore is dwarfed by my Himalayan loathing for Clinton, the worst President ever.

Are write in candidates acceptable here? I have no use for either of the formentioned candidates. For different reasons, likely fore runners to match Clintons position as worst POTUS ever.

Gordon, what a political response. Actually, I might vote for Muhammad over those two even if he did a lousy job of running this board. But we are left with official candidates we have.

It's a shame to say this but--if you leave me with just the official candidates you sure don't leave much to choose from. I don't get any other choices? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Due to his "lock em up, and save them for backpackers only" policy towards public lands management, Gore couldn't get elected to the office of dogcatcher in the interior Rocky Mountain western states.

I'm hardly a political kinda guy, and I've had trouble voting ever since Pat Paulsen stopped running. But what I'm seeing so far in this thread is that I'm not alone in feeling we're a little short on viable candidates this go-'round.

No offense to our Texan friends on this board, but every time I hear Bush speak I come away wondering if he ever finished school. In his defense, his record as governor is not entirely unimpressive.

Then there's our buddy Gore -- I thought I liked him, especially for inventing the internet (much to the surprise of the hundreds of computer geeks who thought they had something to do with it), but lately I question his motives for seeking office, as some of you have already indicated.

If Bush had accepted the Letterman debate invitation I might very well have used that as a deciding factor. (I thought I was saying that in jest, but it may be closer to the truth than I care to admit.)

I'd like to believe our political system makes at least some kind of sense, but when elections like these come around and we, the voters, are basically handed the candidates with little say in the matter, I sometimes wonder.

Harv, if people put as much effort into researching candidates for POTUS, as you put into purchasing your tractor, maybe, just maybe (I have my doubts) we could have some viable candidates. The major problem in this country is (IMHO) apathy. I haven't voted for 20 years, since I got told who was POTUS before I even had a chance to get to the polls. Kinda figured what's the use.

Yeah, Harv, we have a wealth of substance when choosing tractors, unlike POTUS. But I will interpret your response as a lean toward Al. In a very real sense, the choice for POTUS is less important to me than the choice of my tractor. I don't believe the occupant of the office has any real substantive effect on anything, such as the economy--except in some aspects of foreign affairs and, most importantly, as a symbol and role model. These are the areas where Reagan, for example, was such a success and where Clinton has been such a miserable, embarrassing and humiliating failure.
