I put my PTO selector on the "front" position. On yours, if you don't have this, it probably has an "off" position of possibly something to hold the clutch in; whatever. What you want is to be able to easily turn the tractor PTO shaft by hand.

If you have a shield that covers the tractor PTO shaft when in service, raise it.

Then clean the shaft and apply some white grease to the ends of the splines.

Place the implement shaft up against the tractor shaft and rotate the tractor shaft until the splines line up. Push the shaft on a little bit. Then pull back the collar, push the button or whatever it uses to free the lock mechanism. Shove the shaft further in and then tug it to and fro to make sure it's engaged.

Chris, your implement dollys are a great idea which I want to build also for my extensive collection of 2 implements! Got any pictures? I'm sure others would be interested too. Mike.

I have three implements on dollies - chipper, bush hog and snowblower. I bought made up dollies at Northern Tool last time I needed some. I'm sure you can make your own for about the same price as ready-made, and you will end up with stronger casters. I prefer to use all (four) 360* rotating casters and 2x8 treated lumber when building my own. I use carriage bolts, four per corner, to hold the 2x8's together.

A quick hitch set up would be nice for hook ups, but the dollies are hard to beat for maximizing storage space and being able to rearrange the 'furniture' in the garage when needed without using the tractor. I'm to the point where every inch counts :D

I should have said in my description that what I build looks like a standard furniture dolly, just using stronger materials. I use one dolly, (about a 2'x1.5' rectangle) for my bush hog since it has a tail wheel. I put the dolly under the center of the front edge of the bush hog. That's all I need to push 700+ lbs around on concrete. Sometimes I need to turn the tail wheel in the direction I want to go.

My Kubota L4400 came with a black plastic tube that fits over the PTO shaft when not in use. This keeps dirt and grit out of the splines and keeps the grease clean. Mike.

My Kioti DK45 had a similar black rubber PTO shaft cover. It was really great until the time I "temporarily" laid it on the fender; I haven't seen it since. A replacement was something like $30!!!, so I've been just leaving the shaft bare until I come up with a durable replacement cover (condoms keep the dust off, but fall apart too fast).

I have lost everyone of these I ever owned and would lose new ones, so I just clean and re grease when hooking up; not sure how well "The condoms are for my tractor honey" would go over...

My NH has a hard plastic cover that screws on. I exercise my best self discipline by walking it over to the workbench any time I take it off :D

It doesn't seem to loosen and fall off by itself. Sometimes I have to put channel locks on it gently to break it loose.

mine is like a soft rubber of vynal one. I throw it on the work bench in the garage when i hook up a PTO implement. I store everything in an outbuilding so it makes it easier not to lose it.

If I was the only one who used my tractors, this would work fine.

My kids bought me a refrigerator magnet which states " A MAN WHO HAS A FULL SET OF TOOLS, HAS NO CHILDREN".

Right now, I am trying to track down a S&W .357 with laser grips and I haven't even seen one of our tractors in six months.

Keeping track of tractors is hard enough ! I can't imagine having to worry about keeping track of my guns as well. That is probably why some people have adopted the "no tool loaning" attitude.
If my wife thought using condoms was part of owning a tractor, you can bet I wouldn't own three. I would be lucky to own a weedeater or a pushmower.
She doesnot believe in loaning out that tool! David from jax

Sorry, do not have any pictures on this new computer. The dollys are very simple. Just get 2 6' 4x4's and 2 pieces of 2x6 about 3' long. Make a rectangle and screw them together. Now where the 2x6 and 4x4 overlap screw on 4 cheap 3" casters. I get mine at HF for $3 or so each. Now flip it over and there you have it. That is what I use for my Bush Hog and Disc. The one for my 2 bottom plow has pieces of 2x4 on top to support the plow. The ones for my 2 grader blades are much smaller, about the size of a furniture dolly.

Thanks for the general idea. Mike.

That's a good one. Fortunately, or maybe not, my children are too far away to borrow things.

I have a brother who has been death on tools all his life. If he uses a circular saw, it lays in the grass where he last set it down. It could be there for days, rain or shine. When his sons, my nephews, were younger, for their birthdays I would buy them hand tools. Also gave them each a small toolbox to keep them in. It was a standard family joke that they were NEVER to loan their tools to their Dad.

Your brother sounds like my father in law. He would buy cheap hand tools as well as power tools from Harbor freight as he knew he would leave them lying where he last used them. For a couple of years after he died, we continued to find tools and tractor parts scattered about the property, I am sure there are plenty still out there.

I am from a family of mechanics and like to have decent tools though I am getting too old to do much of my own stuff anymore. Unfortunately, my sons are more like their grandfather than me, so I am constantly replacing tools. They are very good to help me with things I can no longer do and pretty much keep up one of our farms, so it could sure be a lot worse.

Update on BH after shortening PTO shaft by 4-5 inches. Don't know why I didn't do this before. So much easier to hookup to tractor shaft when already on 3 point lift. No worry about jamming PTO either. Thanks for the help.

I have tried everything and there is no easy way. My wife and I wrestled around with one and had no luck, so I called my burly son to come up and he wrestled around with and finally for no apparent reason "click" it went right on.

This is my experience, too.

#1 Disconnecting an auger Sunday, the PTO just would not come off for nuthin. I kept wiping & wiping my hands to get the grease off to get grip, but nuthin. Finally, tired & sweaty as heck, I gave up, walked away & did something else totally un-tractor related. Came back, tried it again & it popped right off. I think I heard it laugh at me.

#2 Connecting flail mower's PTO, my dad could not for the life of him get the PTO to click on. He stepped back, we both said "Hmmm", then I barely touched it & it "clicked" right into place. I hope I get lots of credit.
