I have to totally disagree with you on the brakes on all axles. Brakes are required for over 3K, but does not state all axles. Brake-away is not required till 5K. I have purchased 4 trailers in Illinois, one in 2003, one in 2004, one in 2007, and one just 2 months ago. Two of the trailers were 7K, one was 10K, and one 12K. The 10K and 12K both had brakes on all axles but both 7K trailers had brakes on only one axle. I also do lots of dealing with R&P Carriages, one of the largest trailer suppliers on the net, and they have never mentioned this to me.

Again, this is just a guide, not the "bible", but is produced by the largest boating publications and knowing the editor, Randy Vance, I am certain the info is fairly accurate. He is just that type of guy.

That's interesting. My 24' enclosed car trailer is 101" wide on the box and maybe 105" at the fenders. It's identical to the dozens upon dozens one would see in the paddock at a track on a given weekend.

States are funny when it comes to roadway rules and regulations. I wouldn't have given it a second thought on pulling through IL, but now I know.

Well, its the law but are they going to stop you? I just drove back from St Louis, MO last Thursday and past 2 different diesel trucks pulling two trailers (double pull), on I70. Its not legal there but I saw two. One I followed for better than 50 miles, it was a F-350 pulling a 5th wheel pulling a 8x10 enclosed trailer. We pass 3 cops clocking speeders without a flinch. The other was Dodge pulling a double stack of 4 each 16' bumper pull landscape trailers, 8 in total.

I am not saying to go out and brake the law but I pulled my 10' wide boat in my avatar for well over 25,000 miles in 12 or more states without a single issue. Keep the rig safe, in good shape and maintenance, and do not give them a reason to pull you over and you get by with a lot.

By the way, here is a copy of the law for your area for your reference.

Yeah, I was under the impression that 8'6" was the "standard."

I don't pull bad equipment. Too much $$ on the line. Too many lives at stake.

I had heard that. I drove the neighbors C60 yesterday hauling 3 loads for him. It has the plate on the back still...

Its that way in many states when pulling. My neighbor drove I5 though Cali last summer pulling his 5th wheel from the south to the north heading from San Diego to Seattle and it was 55mph the whole way. Drove him nuts.

It is....kinda. In IL we're allowed to go 8' 6" on interstates and certain state and US highways. Maybe all US highways? We can also go that wide on undesignated routes in the course of doing business or to reach our home or place of business. In other words once I'm off the state highway I'm still legal on the county roads to get to my house. My dump trailer and my flatbed trailer are both 102". My Dad and I built the flatbed 25 years ago. The Secretary of State (IL version of the DMV) required reciepts for the material, and the dimensions of the trailer before we could register it. They didn't have a problem with the 102" width.
Safety equipment and tie downs are not included in the 8' 6" limit.

As for the OP's question...
You can haul most of today's cars on a 14' trailer, but the rear will overhang. That's not a big deal as long as it's tied down properly. The width will give you problems with many cars. Find a trailer with 80" between the fenders.
Any trailer that's truly built to haul a car will be tough to move by hand. I have a buddy that uses a garden tractor to move his trailers in tight spaces. I've used a spot hitch on the front of a truck in tight spaces.
