Seeders Buying Herd Seeder

   / Buying Herd Seeder #21
I have owned a Herd Seeder for 25 years. The first was a used bought at an auction. Not sure of the model but does a great job. It mounted to the tractor. I did buy a GT-77ATV to mount on a fourwheeler 6 years ago. I use it to frost seed alfalfa in standing wheat in late winter. The fourwheeler doesn't mar in or cause any crop damage. It does the best job of seeding that I have seen. It has an unique agitator that does a great job of distrubuting the seed.
I also drive by the Herd Seeder everyday and they are quality outfit.
I just saw them at the Louisville National Machinery Show Friday and they were busy. Several displays were marked sold.
Dave Herd, the owner, is an expert on broadcasting all kinds of seed.

I highly recommend a Herd Seeder. :)

Good Luck!

You can get an extension kit for the Herd M-96 if capacity is an issue. I believe it gives you an additional 2 bushels.

I talked with the second generation family owner of Herd, (son of "Mr Herd") at the National Farm MAchinery Show on this past wed. He brought up the same exact point. He said the old F-160 was a good seller, but not quite as many as the M96. They are essentially of the same design, just a size difference. The subcontractor that poured the casting (base) for each gave them a decent price on the M96 due to volume, but raised the price on the base for the F-160 to the point where it was no longer practical to produce that model. They still carry a full line of parts for each model, just no longer produce NEW F-160's.

Bringing this post back up...question I have is if you had a choice between the F-160, the M-96 or the S3B which one? FWIW the F-160 is used but in new condition the M-96 and S3B would be bought new from Herd direct. It sounds like these are all great products backed by a great American company, but the model nuances make a tough decision.

What I always want in a seeder/fertilizer spreader is more volume.
Fewer trips back to the pallet to refill.

Buy whichever one holds the most.

I found an old M96 in the barn cleaned it up and looking forward to using it. Called Herd for some advice and David? Herd walked me through what I needed to rejuvenate it. Mine is probably 40 years old he said.

Got it fixed up and plan to use it this fall. Here are some pics.

I sent some pics to David Herd with a couple of questions and a day later, I get a fedex box with some parts in it. Grattis. One more example of an excellent company and excellent service.
