Farmall Cub
OK so I've been trolling Ebay and Craigslist for the better part of a year and haven't found the deal yet I am looking for. I am in the market for something for my upstate NY property. I actually have 2 parcels of land 1 is 40 acres of mostly woods with some paths cutting trough it and a small cabin with about an acre and a half of grass that needs to be maintained. It also has a 2 mile long driveway that needs attention. I have a skid steer and a Farmall Cub that I work with up there. The Farmall needs a rebuild so I am looking at upgrading. The second piece of property is also up in NY State, It is just a hair over 5 acres. It has an old barn and I need to do some work. We got hit with a microburst and it destroyed my fence and took down several trees. I still have some cleanup work from that. Also the house has overgrown bushes that need to be pulled out. Luckily I am in a somewhat sandy area where I am. I would like to move snow with it be able to pull out my trailers from behind the barn as well as new fencing and firewood cutting. I also need to cut the 5 acres of field grass with whatever I select. Additionally I need a new trailer as I don't have one for the SS and the one I have is a smaller single axle with no brakes.

That being said I am considering some new tractors and wanted some input, please give me your thoughts: (obviously I'm still on Craigslist looking at used as well)
LS XG3025H or the XJ2025H thoughts on both
MF GC1710 or 1720
TYM T254 HST or 254 HST
Branson 2400

I am not opposed to JD or Kubota but for the price it might be a little out of my league. I have around $20k to spend.

I would like a FEL and backhoe arrangement. I need something to mow the fields with either a mmm or pull behind. Last year I cut those 5 acres by hand with a 36" walk behind. It is relatively flat but I only cut it about once a month. So I am open to suggestions and if I get a SCUT or CUT I will be selling off my SS.

Thanks for the help and input

Larry

Sounds like you would want a bigger tractor.
Just be smart/patient on Craigslist, but be ready to jump. Most people are honest.
You want a heavy machine, but small and nimble.

I agree with mike69440. I think you should be looking for a tractor in the 30HP range. I did find a used R4047H (47HP) in your price range.

For a trailer look for something in the 10-12K rating. A 7K would be too light.

For mowing I think a 3 pt. brush hog would work fine or a rear finish mower if the fields are smooth.

I don't know how much backhoe work you have to do but a BH is a big expense. i adapted a Woods BH750 to my tractor and 90% of the year the BH sits in my yard.

This ones bigger than you need but in the price range.
LS R447H Tractor, Loader, HYDRO!!!!

Here's a new MF that fits the price range and its in NJ.
217 Massey Ferguson Farm

Another new tractor w/ BH slightly above your range.
Kioti CK 351 loader and backhoe

Thank guys. I appreciate the input. I might have to take a ride and look at the MF. So you guys feel that I need to be in the 30 HP range? I was originally in the 25 range and if I stay there I can add the backhoe. I agree with you that it will be a little use just wanted the convenience of having one if I need it.

I have a 26 HP JD 4200 with backhoe, loader and mmm. It would do the work you haver in mind but it' bigger brothers the 4300 or 4400 would be much better.

Definitely sounds like you need a machine in the CUT class and not a SCUT. 30-40 hp is a good and popular size. 20k will buy a great setup in that size range in my area.

In upstate NY - New Holland TC45D Tractor Loader Backhoe w/ Heated Cab 4x4, Diesel

slightly out of budget but a heck of a tractor. Not sure how close Syracuse is to your property. I am geographically challenged sometimes.

I'll ask my neighbor if your interested. He has a JD 790 with loader and BH. Its a 30 HP tractor 4x4 gear tractor. I know he always maintained it. He mentioned he might sell and buy a new one. I think he was asking around 15-16K but I'd have to confirm with him.
For the price I'd really take a look at the LS 4047 I posted earlier. No BH but good tractor.

790 is a good tractor. That's an ok price. Low hours might be worth 15k. I suppose prices are higher in NY state.

Also rec you skip the backhoe in favor of other more-used implements: mower, trailer(s), etc. you haven't named a real use for a bh yet.

I have been thinking about my use and for what I need to accomplish a backhoe is unnecessary. It will also need to be removed to use the 3 pt hitch and I'm considering a brush hog with rear discharge over a mmm. So this may become an art piece that sits in the barn collecting dust. I can rent a backhoe if I find any projects that I need to do that require a backhoe and put the money to better use. Thanks for the input you guys have helped steer me in the right direction and possibly saved me thousands of dollars. I can get a terramite with backhoe used for $5k. Which is what the BH would cost so you guys are right it's an unnecessary expense

In some cases more horsepower isn't always better but I think it may suit your needs. With 40+ acres I think you'll find having the bigger tractor a benefit.

Buy the biggest tractor you can with your budget. Kioti is running a special right now where you can get the NX5010 with FEL for around 20k.

I just stumbled upon a Kubota L2500 with FEL. It's a little underpowered at 27 hp but it weighs in at just around 3,000 pounds. The asking price seems reasonable. I am going to take it for a test drive. Anything I should know about these units. It is the 4x4 as it does have the MFWD and power steering. There is no HST. Thoughts from you guys? Thanks

I have a B2710 which is the same hp but lighter tractor. I use it for spraying, landscape rake and cutting grass. Use 6 foot rfm with good result and I think a 52 inch rough cut for brush and it is great for that. It does have hst. I have used it with a 500 gallon trailer sprayer but not a recommendation with that much weight. That sprayer loaded will weigh over 4,000 pounds. Pulls it fine in field as long as dirt is not muddy. Think it will move any trailer you would have if not loaded. I would look at the ground clearance if you will be putting in the woods on any tractor. If you will use a blade with on your drive no idea how well it will work but the weight of the L over the B would be better than the B which a 6 foot blade is too much for mine if on an angle.
