Buying off CL and the buyer wants cash

Last week I drove the car to look at the CL tractor. I am a sucker to talking myself into the deal just because I have the trailer. The seller was wanting to text only so I told him I would drive up and if I decided I wanted it I would go get the trailer and cash the next day. So I make the trip gas free thankfully since the tractor was a no go.

I sold my old King Kutter rotary mower on CL this summer. It was old but I kept it in good shape. I listed it for slightly more than I paid for it new and specified cash only and the "first person with $xxx.xx gets it". It took a couple weeks, and only a few emails from potential buyers for me to sell it. The buyer showed up with a trailer, and had the full amount of cash in his hand. He handed me the cash as he got out of his truck even before looking at the mower. He was thrilled and so was I. He even followed up with a thank you email to me a few days later after he used it. Not many times can you buy something, use it heavily for 15 years, and get all of your money back when you sell it.

There is time value to money, ....you did get your original investment back, but that cash would likely buy you only about half of a new mower in today's dollars.

I had a similar experience selling my JD M1008 dual spindle mounted brush cutter. CL ad. Priced at what I gave for it 6 or 7 years earlier. First phone call drove 100 miles to get it. I had it mounted on my tractor to demonstrate. He didn't even want to hear it run. I insisted. Loaded it, had a nice 10 minute visit. And it was over. Easiest sale I ever made. He was a JD guy and wanted it for his 4010.
