Buying steel for coupons

I have just sold one my my chainsaws (down to 17....) so I have a bit of spare cash right now.
I might as well get some good, and useful books.

A good tig book perhaps?

If you want to save a lot of money on steel, don't buy from the metal supermarket or farm store that sells short and specialty pieces. Go to the big steel supplier and have them make a couple cuts if the pieces are too long. They might have a $100 or so minimum order but you'll get a lot more steel for way less per foot. You could also check with scrap yards or even some of the bigger fab shops. Big shops often throw out pieces that are small to them but quite large for DIY projects and hobbyists.

I dont see any fab shops throwing anything away around here. If its big enough to lay a bead on, they will find a way to use it. I can go to the local welding/metal store and pick up drops pretty reasonable.

There is a Wilkinson steel not too far away. There is another plate and steel place too.
They are both a ways off, out by where air liquide is.
I will call them up for a price quote, and possibly stop by when I get my torch filled next time.

Hi Deereman. I agree with Arc Weld. Buy from the big suppliers. I deal with AJF Div of Russel Metals. Just email them for a quote. FYI 1/4x2 HR Flat x20ft on my June purchase was $56.49. Wilkinson Steel won't even talk to the little guys like me. I will go to Metal Supermarket for the odd piece if I am stuck or it is a Saturday. Good luck!

The only two I could find were Wilkinson, and island plate.

Metal supermarkets is actually pretty decent here in town. Just don't order online. The online prices are way inflated, but if you call the local shop directly they are a lot lower. Franchise vs corporate thing they said. I have gotten good service and pricing for them, so they are on my list of 3 that I use. All depends on what I need and who has the best price (and where I will be driving to, hopefully on the way.) They will do all the basic cut to length, etc you might want for reasonable too. OK - all this applies to my local store...Yours may or may not be so good.

AJF may be listed under Russell Steel. They are in Nanaimo somewhere. They deliver to me in Victoria . Island Plate in Victoria is accomodating Ask for Brent.

You're right. They are corporate and their pricing is fixed but you can benefit in value in other ways. Drop off a box of donuts when you're in the area on an occasion you're not in need of material. Depending on the staff they C cuts for free or perhaps bump you up a notch
