I strongly recommend that as a buying strategy you first negotiate for the tractor. Including implements muddies the waters because comparison shopping across each dealer's stocked or ordered brands for various implements increases the complexity considerably. The complexity could be handled by printing out a spread sheet or manually drawn matrix for implement sizes and prices but still better to clear up the tractor price first.

That accomplished and assuming you are getting competitive bids from competing dealers (within brand), then submit your implement list for a combined bid. Sure this takes time but can save you a lot of money. What is the rush, are they selling these things off the back of a truck while glancing furtively behind them?

You will never be in a position to command better deals on implements than when buying the tractor. Two things in your favor, at least. Bigger dollar figure and tendency of dealership to focus on tractor (big ticket item) and not have little things (implements) queer the deal. It worked for me, Partner in dealership told me he was selling to me at cost + shipping and showed me the invoices. Since he was getting paid for some stuff to be ordered and received some weeks hence it greased the wheels of progress. I didn't mind as it was a great return on the short time scale investment from my point of view. The dealer didn't have to front $ to buy implements so he went for it, again focusing on his tractor sale.

When you have selected a dealer based on price and your expectations of service after the sale and whatever factors and Ouija board machinations you went through, T H E N and only then, when ready to sign on the dotted line and just as he is holding his breath while you prepare to sign or mentally he is spending the commision in advance, you pause dramatically and say, "what about the 50 hour service?" Lotsa guys you talked with got their 50 hour service free as part of the deal. Can he do that too or should you check back with him after you get a reading on the best deal that xyz dealer down the street or in next town can give on your total tractor + implement + 50 hour service price.

I'll bet you a hypothetical rootbeer float that they go for it. My L4610 50 hr service was over 300 dollars, my cost. They could have easily given it to me but I was so lame I thought it was automatically included as a standard benefit that I didn't ask. Somehow I got that impression, couldn't be that because they never ever mentioned a cost associated with the 50 hr when the 50 hr was discussed (clever felows) that I "somehow" made a bad assumption. I know, I know, on a $30,000 + deal why carp about $300 and change. Cause to me $300 is 15-20 nights out with my honey (we are cheap dates). Your deal may be smaller or a bunch bigger but why give away money????

Good luck, and if you use any or all of the above, fire in a post and let us know the results.

I think your on the right track, especially on the larger units. On my BX2200 I negotiated $9800.00 for the tractor and 60" deck. I wasn't sure what implements I wanted, but I got his bid for many different implements and he gave me his word he would honor those prices in to the fall. This is also a good method if your not sure what you will need.

I was talking to a dealer in Mi about the 50 hr. service on a 3010 I'm thinking of buying and he blew it off as inconsequential. He said I could do it myself if I could change oil in my car and it was only a couple of filters needed. Was he accurate or just trying to head off any further negotiation?

Did you ask him then if he's going to provide the motor oil, hydraulic oil, and filters?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Total cost of my 50 hr ran over $300. Can't see your checkbook from here but it is/was CONSEQUENTIAL to me. Semi-retired, fixed income (fixed h--l it must be broke like me, etc etc).

Use his words wisely. If he shruggs it off as NO BIG DEAL then what possible objection could he have to throwing it in for free as a good will gesture?

I just recently did the 50 hours service on my L3010HST. The cost of the filters, oil and Super UDT was $267. The three filters alone were about $80. If you can get it thrown it is is worth while. Especially if you don't have to figure out what to do with all that oil as your draining it out.

After talking to 3 MI dealers I could not get any to cooperate with me on throwing in the 1 st service. All gave me the same b.s. on easy to do etc., etc. Also, I must look as if I have a bulging wallet(I don't) because I can't get near the deal on an L 3010 HST or the L2600/L3000 I see others posting here have received (some even from the same dealers).

Is NW Ohio too far for you? If not, then you might try Industrial Equipment at 419-836-2561. Their price on the BX was as good as any on the net...dunno bout the bigger machines, though.

Easy to do story, huh? Did you ask any of them if it was so easy to do why would they kill a $xxxxx.xx deal rather than do it? You might explain to each of them in turn that you are shopping two other dealers with essentially equivalent prices and that the first to give you consideration on the 50 hour just won the tie breaker. This would be more powerful if (now a brief digression but central to the theme: Not getting nosy about your wallet but if you are financing and will be making a substantial down payment (hopefully larger than the minimum) have a negotiable instrument in hand or at least take out your checkbook as part of the performance.) you do the stuff in parentheses immediately up stream of this part of the sentence. (I wasn't an english major.) If it is a cash deal (personal check, I don't recommend walking around with that kind of bucks in your pocket, even in a concealed carry state.) get the exact figure in advance, down to the pennies including tax if any. Bring a negotiable instrument for that amount. Lay it on the desk/counter whatever and say I'm ready to book the order if you are ready to give me consideration on the 50 hr. If not I've got two other dealers who may, its all the same to me. Pause, shut up, be silent. Give them up to about 30 sec to give a favorable response. Anything less than what yo asked is not good enough. Accept no discount, no "split the difference" or other wimpy BS.

ou've met their price and they have told you that the 50 hr is no big deal therefore why can't they do it?

If you have a preference on dealers rank them 1, 2, 3. Try this performance on #2. If they refuse tell them to call you if they change their mind but not to delay as you will be seing another dealer soon. Go to #1 and tell them you would rather deal with them if they could give consideration on the 50 hr. Mention that you woild appreciate it if they could get a decision soon as another dealer is checking into it and if they call with it approved before you sign with someone else yo would feel honor bound to go through with it.

I really think it is worth trying for about $300 or whatever. We are cheap dates, dinner and movies is less than $30. That wold be 10 nights out with my sweetie for a few minutes performance.

Do they realy genuinly want your business? How accomodating will they be later if they can't toss in something they value so little. I wouldn't argue the value of the 50 hr just agree it is not a big deal so it shouldn't be a problem for them to toss it in.

I'd try this on at least one if not two dealers (preferably all three if neccessary) it shouldn't take long and it is good to develop your negotiating skills.
