Compare the folks in TBN vs. eBay. I'd much rather do business with people here than eBay.

I guess I would make sure I have pictures, copies of all work orders and maintenance reciepts. And finally I guess I would go see the tractor before I bought. I hate buying anything unseen.

I bought mine via machinefinder.com, which is the JD network of dealers. My Cub was one year old with 90 hours. I called the BBB and the local Chamber of Commerce to inquire about the dealer. I had several phone conversations with the dealer about condition. He was willing to write it into the contract if I desired. He gave me the name and phone number of the previous owner. I also checked out their web site. Everything I checked came up positive, so I went ahead with the deal. I have never regretted it. The tractor still performs well and has never seen a dealer for service since I bought it 3 years ago.
By the way, the dealer was General Equipment Company in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Well, here's a positive story about e-bay! I just bought a JD 4600 sight unseen (except pictures) from Coal Valley, Ill. and I live near Seattle. It was a theft recovery from JD finance and a Kubota dealer had it. It had 150 hours on it and was $18750.00 (no tax) but it had all of the important features that I wanted and only a few hours on it. The price was $7,000.00 less than my local dealer wanted for a new one. I was hooked. I called the dealer a number of times and talked to him about it and then I put a $1,000.00 deposit on it on my Visa. A Visa payment can be reversed if it needs to.
The dealer had agreed to bring it out to Billings Mont. and would accept my check for the remaining balance if I liked it.
That spoke a great deal to me. The dealer was so sure that I would like the tractor that he was willing to haul it (himself) 1200 miles on the chance that I would be sold when I saw it.
Sometimes life demands faith.
It is a great tractor! I bought it within 5 minutes of driving it to make sure everything worked and then hauled it back to my home. My expenses added $360.00 to the price, and took 4 days, but I would do it again. Also, if its a John Deere, you can take the serial number to a dealer and they can do a search for you about it's history. I found out that my tractor was originally sold in Texas in June of '02 and had 4 warranty repairs including a new battery. The original warranty is still good until this June!

Are you planning to go get the tractor, or have it shipped? If you are getting it, cash when you arrive. simple. If you are looking at shipping it - sight unseen, perhaps see if you can find a fellow TBN'r or a dealer in that area to go inspect the tractor for you. I would expect you would pay that person something, they would provide additional dig pics.
My friend did this with a porsche - a local porsche enthusiast went with camera to verify the condition, sent a zillion close up pics, and (in addition to VIN check) the deal was successful. Just a thought.

By any chance was your cubs one of the ones with the gas engine... I thought I saw a smaller ( 20-25hp ) cub on a lot with a gas engine.. thought it was pretty neat, as my old tractors are all gas jobs..

I bought a $16000 vehicle sight unseen, off of Ebay a few years ago. I bought a round trip plane ticket and took a cashiers check. If I didnt like it when I got there, I would have been out the air fair. Very nerve racking experience but it turned out to be a good purchase.
