Thanks, Boone. I'm going to do some homework on welding before I make a purchase.

Bob,
If you would like to learn more about welding, go to the Do it Yourself forum here and search "welding"

As others have said....a small mig welder is NOT the tool for the job. You'll need a arc welder. Mig welders are for thin metals....maybe 3/16 or less. They're best for automotive use (body work) and various other fun small projects. They are not designed to burn into thick steel like what's on the BX bucket.

MIG welders are NOT only for thin materials. My MIG welder can weld 1/4" plate in one pass. Good MIG welders are not cheap unlike most stick welders. Yes smaller MIG welders are limited, just make sure you choose the correct welder type and size for your jobs.

Amen to the "not just for light materials" I can single pass weld 1/4 plate and multiple pass thicker with my Lincoln SP125. If you aren't getting penetration, turn it up! I run mine hotter than the recommendation on the inside cover of the machine. There is nothing wrong with flux cored wire. I've used it in 1/8" diameter using two guns at about 600 amps each for build up! I weld (along with machining) for a living and know better. Don't let anybody tell you different. If you contemplate doing heavier materials, you might want to step up to a 220 volt machine. I welded hooks on my 830 Case with mine 4 years ago and they will hold anything the loader can pick. I also built a gooseneck trailer with mine. I did use a larger wire feed for the main frame, but did all the rest with the little Lincoln. Excellent little welder.
Hope this helps.

I used a stick welder to attach the plate and chain hook in photo. I'm just a self taught welder so I'll leave the welding questions to someone more qualified on this board. It is my understanding that the small mig welders might not be heavy enough for this project. I would like to own a mig but can't justify the cost to get one of the better welders. I usually just dial back my stick welder or use the torch and braze it on thin metal.

watersjj,

Thank you for the reply. Nice job on the hook. Paint match looks perfect.

JMP,

As I have not done any welding in about 30 years, I would probably have the hook included as a dealer add-on as well. Thanks for the reply.

I have a Century 250 amp MIG welder. It also welds aluminum so it's quite versatile.

What does a welder like this cost? How thick of steel plate can it weld?

Thanks

Bob
