Kubota BX-22
Yesterday I was running the tractor when I started hearing a loud THUMP, THUMP, THUMP of something hitting the floorboard of the tractor from underneath. I had the mower deck on (but not running) and could not see anything. I took the deck off, climbed under and found (attached photo) the boot where the main shaft comes out of the engine decided to rip and fly around with every revolution of the engine. But seeing how it's just a boot to keep dirt out of that connection of the shaft, I don't think it's necessary as long as I don't drive in a swamp. Any other opinions?

If it were me I'd replace it as soon as possible. I wouldn't want any dirt/grit in the bearing. I think it's cheap insurance against a more costly repair down the road. just my 2 cents

I asked the same question about a week ago, since both rubber boots are cracked on my front axles. The replays said the boot and the part it covers is one piece and you have to order it that way. Did I get correct information? Is this repair something a dealer needs to do. I asked Emerich sales and I was told they weren't covered by warranty.

Dumb me, I just noticed this is a different boot from the poster.

I had to buy the whole piece, The dealer said they where easy to replace, you have to re-adjust the tow-in I believe.

Jim,

I would ask why not?

Now I would expect that if the failure was due to abuse, such as a stick ripping them, then it would seem reasonable it should not be a warranty issue.

But what if they were splitting due to poor materials being used in the manufacture, brittleness, whatever? Then it should be a warranty issue.

I did change a rubber boot on my B2910 (without even asking about warranty) because I could not tell if a stick tore it or not. My best guess was that it was a stick though, so I did not even bring the warranty question up to the dealer. Had the rubber been real stiff and brittle though, I probably would have...

If this item wasn't necessary, then Kubota wouldn't have installed it in the first place. The purpose of this boot is to keep dirt, dust, water, etc. out of the joint. I would replace it ASAP. The part number is K2561-14130, and can be found on page 132 & 133 of the parts manual. The cost from www.tractorsmart.com is $1.25 and $5.00 shipping. Cheap enough to purchase a spare. If you ruin the complete front joint, then the cost will rise to $45.65 plus $5.00 shipping...... your choice.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,

I had the same thing happen to me. BUT it hit the wire to the fuel pump and destroyed the connection. See this thread from about a week ago.

web page

It did not damage the boot I just slid it back on. As you know it is only held on by friction. Yet again ANOTHER poor design by Kubota. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifYou would think it would be held in place by a strap. As the rubber gets old it is bound to sag, hit the rotation shaft and fly off.

The next time someone who has a 23 or 2230 is under the tractor check and see if they changed the design on the new an improved version of the BX.
