Friends, the day started off so well. I uncovered the trusty BX2200 from its winter siesta, and it fired right up. I drove to the spot where I store the bucket for the summer, and it came off lickety split. In the process, I engaged the parking brake, but must have applied too much force. Now, it will not disengage. It is a fully mechanical brake - push with right foot on the brake pedal and catch it with a much smaller lever on the left. It is possible that I pushed the brake to the point where there is no additional travel to move forward to disengage. More footpower has not solved the problem.

Thanks for any help. I can see the grass growing as I write this.

You can always use the brake adjustments to loosen it to gain movement, one for each rear brake. I'd guess that the latch lever is sticky. Have someone pull on the lock lever while applying pressure to the brake.

You could always are some grease for ease of movement
Stepping on the brake pedal you can't pry the lever off?

Thanks for that suggestion. I have never messed with the brake before. Can offer a bit of help on how to do the adjustment? Many thanks.

Under the tractor in front of the rear wheels are 2 adjustment nuts with lock nuts. Just loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster to lengthen the rods (I think could be shorted) to relieve brake tension. Item 16

Might help visualize the process.

Note you don't have to pull tires you can reach just fine from underneath.

If it resolves your problem you are welcome if not we'll try something else.

Could it be the cam over traveled and is stuck over center?

If the case maybe the loosening the adjustment enough to return the actuating arms back to normal and adjust to take up the slack from wear?

Just thinking out loud.

OP update: Success. And I have no idea how.

Thanks to Eagle1's suggestion and illustration, I easily found the tensioner and promptly snapped a crescent wrench by turning it in the wrong direction. The tractor gods demand tribute. So, I checked out the vid and discovered the proper rotation to loosen. And that is what I did, again assuming that relieving the tension would allow me to depress the brake pedal and release it. Nope. Loosening the turnbuckle did not have that effect. And the pedal remained unresponsive to to my repeated mashing. It just travelled to the end and caught. Until something happened, too fast for me to process. The pedal came back. Frankly, I was a bit of an idiot and figured I could reproduce it, so I depressed the brake again. And was back to square one. So I figured that there must be something going on with the locking mechanism, not the brake pedal, but found nothing in the operator's manual that helped.

As I was about to pack it in, I happened to press on the differential lock pedal, and as soon as I did, the brake pedal released. This time, I finished my mowing before doing any more scientific experiments. Once parked, I lightly engaged the brake, and then tried to release it, without success. The brake just locked further each time I depressed it. And then I hit the differential pedal, as before, and Bob's your uncle. The pedal released.

I will be very interested to know if any of you knowledgeable folks can explain that one. For the time being, I think I shall try to avoid using the brake.

My thanks again, to all of you, especially Eagle 1, for the good help. I have had the BX2200 for 20 years. It is one of the best investments I have ever made.

Here are some parts diagrams to help. All I can think is that the diff lock linkage is some how holding the brake lock...If you want service and or part manual I can upload them to one of my servers.

If you do not set the brake does the lock pedal return if you press on it? If not the spring could be an issue or a bind in the lock shaft. It does sound a lot like the diff linkage is interacting with the lock lever linkage.

Note these manuals are from the first gen machine I bought in ~2000 and have over 4500 hours on.

I appreciate the offer for the additional info, but do not want to put you to the trouble. At least at this point. I am not mechanically inclined, and do a better job busting things than repairing them. But, I am not giving up on this. Though, as it stands, since the tractor is humming away, and I seem to have found a work-around, it is not a high priority. I am going to get familiar with the differential system to see how it connects to the brake.

To your question about the brake lock, it seems spongy to me. One thing I have to try is whether the brake locks in progressive stages without depressing the lock pedal. I have a feeling it does, because when I lightly locked the brake, it locks further the more I depress it. It does not release as it should.

E1, you got me beat on hours. My baby has got but 594 hours. It has lived pampered life.

Thanks again for all the help and interest.

Mine has definitely not been pampered :ROFLMAO:
Been abused for many season but now she is in semi retirement only used for the little jobs and backup mower. Way too handy and useful to let her go.
