boustany, could you tell me what's the brand of the wheels you used? Your comment about steel and rubber wheels is great, I'll go with steel (the BH is in my garage). I was sure that rubber was the way to go but I didn't think about steel. Pictures of it would be great, I'm interested if you have time to take some.

Also is the rated weight on each wheel (caster) the max rate or the operating weight?

I don't know, I'll have to go back to the hardware store later this week I will ask them.

Thanks for asnwering everybody.... I I can manage to build something decent I'll post a picture of it.

Sure: I got mine at 'Princess Auto' - they have stores all across central Canada except Quebec, but they do mail order too. They sell cheap stuff - in all meanings of that word - but some things are a comparative bargain. Every once in a while they put their casters 'on sale' for about 1/2 price.

Go to www.princessauto.com The ones I used don't come up online because for some reason their online stuff is a subset of their catalog, which you can download. On page 48 of the castors, etc., section item 2040257 and 2040258 (swivel & fixed).

In general any large (ish) diameter steel caster will do. I made my tiller dolly using 3" caster and it works ok, but I'd stick with 6"

The thing is rubber compresses & you basically have to push the castor uphill (i.e. up the compressed rubber) to move it. Steel doesn't compress so, as long as you've got a hard, flat surface you're better off.

I'll take some pictures and post them as soon as I can.

Thanks for the link (you should remove the final dot though).

I downloaded the full catalogue (41 Mb) and the casters you're talking about are on page 347. That's exactly what I need. 2040257 and 2040258 have a rated capacity of 1100lbs.

I must admit that a catalogue like that can give a lot of ideas. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again and I'm looking forward to see pics of your dolly.

P.S. About stores location, not in Quebec... that's a good thing. That way I'll save 7.5% tax.

Thanks - I fixed the dot for posterity.

You may save tax - but you'll pay shipping. On the other hand, I rarely visit the stores and walk away without spending a couple hundred dollars .... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I get there e mail sales catalogs, but they don't ship to the US the last time that I checked. I use it just for new ideas and price comparison after adjusting for the US/Canadian $$$ difference..

Those BH dollys make short work of mounting and dismounting. I built my dolly before I took the BH off for the 1st time so I don't even know if it takes more time or not. Don't plan on trying without it anyways /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My original dolly used casters I had off of a heavy duty bakery roller. They were so tall that I had very little wiggle room to clear the lower bracket while getting in under the sheetmetal. So I went to Northern and bought the shortest heavyduty set they had. I believe they were rated at 800lbs ea. They lowered the frame enough to give me enough clearance.

I've rolled it all over the shop without any problems.

Made a similar setup for the FEL also. I used a std store bought furniture dolly for the FEL and rigged up a couple tall plastic anti scalp wheels to work on the two stands. It's not as easy to manuver around but it is manuverable.

<<I built my dolly>>

I enjoyed others' posts of their home built dollies. I just thought I'd post some pictures for people that either don't have the time to build their own or the tools. I just didn't want to lose seat time right now just to change attachments. Yes the box store dollies have rubber wheels and it's hard to push. Maybe some day I'll build my own with better materials but for now sign me out in the yard. Richard
