I only recently dropped the mower deck on my BX23, and found the blades on the hydrostatic cooling fan were all gone. I bought the tractor used, and was under the impression that the deck had never been off. A buddy has a BX25, and said he was told that it was easier to replace the fan on a 23, than on his. When I look on BXpanded, they didn't list skid plates for the 23, so maybe I'm wondering if this is true. It still looks like a pain.

I can't tell you anything about the 23 vs. 25 and the difficulty of changing the fan. I can tell you that BXpanded's plate is not listed for the older models, but Bro-Tek makes plates for all the models. I put the rear one on my BX2230 and it can just stay on even for mowing.

Unfortunately, it seems the fix is rather involved. I believe you have to either move the tranny or the engine to get the fan on and off. As RaydaKub said, Bro-Tek makes a skid plate that fits the older BX tractors.

I have a Bro-tek plate on my 23 and wouldn't leave home with out it!

Search the forms I think some one did a right up on doing it .

Personally when mine gets that bad the shaft will get cut and a rigid keyed coupling on it to make it easier the 2nd time around.

I recently had my fan replaced on an old BX2200 while it was in for other repairs, the mechanic said on that model replacing the fan was not a big deal like on newer models such as our 2660. I contacted Richard at Bro Tek and got a skid plate for it and my BX2660. He still sells them for the older models.

I don't know about the BX23 specifically though.

Thanks for the replies. I dropped the deck on the tractor before I helped get some downed trees out the woods at my parent's home. Thinking about it, I was in some brush so maybe it broke then. Should I have heard anything? There isn't the first blade left on the darn thing. It almost looks like a white plastic collar!

It's not likely you would have heard anything as the blades are just a thin plastic. Some members have reported hearing theirs go, but I don't think most do.

Some owners have tried cheaper repairs that avoided pulling the shaft, either by splitting the collar of the replacement fan, or by making sheet metal blades of their own and screwing in place to an existing collar. As you have no blades left to use as a template you'll need someone to provide a photo and some dimensions if you go down that route, but it might be worth considering.
