Does anyone use tire chains on their BX tractor for winter operation? If so, do you have chains on all four wheels or just the front or back?

Also, does anyone have an opinion on adverse effects to the transmission using tire chains?

I have turfs on my BX2200. For winter, I run 2-link chains on the rear and switch to bar tires for the front.
Front chains are typically problematic, in that the steering knuckle is close to the rim. They also place alot more stress on the front drivetrain.

Chains on the back are not an issue. On in less than 10 minutes and no ill effects that I can detect- other than the bumpy ride!!!

I bought them for the rear wheels but never even put them on through three winters. 4WD has handled everything I need through up to 2 feet of snow.

YMMV!

I have been through only one winter with my BX23 plowing. Using my front blade on turfs I had no traction issues at all with up to 18" of snow on a 13% grade.

I have used turfs and R-4's on a BX in Upsate New York winters. Never had any problem with either.

I would try first and see what you think using no chains.

I thought that for sure I would need chains as I clean a path through the yard to a Dog Kennel and Work Shop that is down an incline. I have barely spun a wheel getting back out in some very severe weather.

Would Ag tires be better or worse than Turf tires in the snow?

Ags better in deep snow but how deep can you really get in a BX anyway?
Hard pack or ice - probably a toss-up.

I live in the Midwest, so these suggestions may not apply to you in Idaho:

Had turfs on my former BX2200. No probs with snow removal.
Have both for my BX23 but only use the turfs for "special" purposes.

Very unlikely you will need chains.

Front blade with hydraulic angle adjust is the way to go unless you have a "lot" of big snows. Then use a blower (quicker but extra cost for dedicated implement) or use the FEL (slower but multi-use attachment) to make larger piles.

I have been very happy with the front blade and have since sold my rear blade.

I have a 70's B7100 that came with a rear blade and a 3pt snowblower. I doubt we will get enough snow for the blower but if we do you can bet I will be trying it out :) My driveway is gravel but the road is paved, worse case scenario I would be doing about 200ft of gravel and 300ft of paved road, this would get my wife out to the main road so she can go to work while I take a 'snow day' :D I think I would be OK without chains on the gravel but not so sure on the paved road if it packs up.
