BX Boom Pole

Is any of my fellow BX'ers using a Boom Pole?

If so, what kind and what for?

Looking to get one to assist lifting some heavy ~500 lbs items off a trailer and want to get feedback on how well a BX works under these loads.

I have noticed few (if any) "sub compact" like Boom Poles (i.e. farm force, TSC etc) so if your using a "real" Cat 1 are you getting enough range (lift etc)?

Also, since I have never used one my impression is there are for "stationary" lifting - I suppose it is possible to lower items and move slowly but the moment arm is against you with weight that is out. Any experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated.

What is your 3pt lift capacity? My B5200 is only around 300-400lb I think. If you have a FEL that may be a better option with ample counterweight of course.

I've used one for pulling out T posts and lifting small, and placing heavy metal grates over drainboxes during my driveway project). Top link length has to be set up carefully so you don't run out of lift. TSC boom poles have a 500lb capacity out at the end (so they say) but I've not tested it. Northern makes a heavier one with 1000lb capacity. Difficult to tell if that 500lb capacity outstrips the BX24 3 pt lift capacity because the specs don't speculate out that far from the lift point. Overall, not as versatile as I had hoped but I'm probably not as creative with it as I could be. Easy to hitch up.

I did a quick googley on BX lift capacity...

Lift Capacity @ Lift Point (lbs.) 1210 (that'd be directly beneath the lift arms I guess)

Lift Capacity @ 24" Behind 680 (Hmm, almost half the above rating only 2 ft back from the tractor?)

Does that mean if you have an 8ft boom pole you should only lift ~ 100lbs that far out!!

Be careful, the further you go away from the back of the tractor, the less the capacity. Dont break your tractor or worse!!

Moral of the story seems to keep yer boom pole as short as possible for heavy weight!

I have a Redland Hills Handi-Hitch, in part because I figured I would want the their telescoping boom pole one day. Right now, I have the short boom pole that I used to drag some logs out of the woods. Worked like a champ.

You need the handi-hitch gizmo to fit the boom-pole onto, though, which is no problem for me, as I'm always dragging my trailer around...

If you order, make sure they dry-fit the pieces together first before shipping. Mine didn't quite fit up. However, a quick call to Bill got another rig sent out immediately, and he paid for the return shipping on the first set-up. Very customer oriented, in my opinion.

The problem I had with my boom pole was the limited range. Lifting something out of the back of a pickup truck or trailer, I usually didn't have the range to sit the item on the ground. My solution was to weld a plate and braces on the base of the boom and hung a swivel pulley on the top. I then mounted a 2500 lb winch on the plate that runs off 12V battery and ran the cable and hook through the pulley. This works great. I can just pull cable to hard to get to places and winch things out and up.
