I have been reading here about this kind of project on Kubota's and I am thinking of doing it myself. Did you purchase the materials on line or catalog? If so, is there any chance of part numbers and supplier for the pressure gauge, hose and hook ups? I don't want to abuse your hard work but if I don't have to invent your wheel it will save me effort.

Thanks.

I would also appreciate any extra info.

The gauge is a glycerine filled 0 - 3000psi class A with a male 1/4" npt fitting.$10 - $15 at Northern tool or any supply store. The hose is 18" (so I could put the gauge where I could see it) - also 1/4" male male. One female female 1/4" npt coupler to mate the hose and gauge. The quick disconnect female coupler came from my local dealership along with the shims.

The shim part #s;

31351-37950 .4mm
-37960 .2mm
-37970 .1mm

Expect around 40psi increase with each .1mm increase to the pressure relief.

I am guessing around a 15% increase in lift capacity on both the FEL and backhoe with the 275psi increase on my machine (1775 to 2050). That is only a little over 100 lbs at the FEL - it is calculated by the static load of the FEL at the center of the bucket (< 200lbs) + the factory capacity at this point (600lbs) x 15% = 120lbs + -.

A little less than 1/2 lb (.43) lift capacity increase for every psi added.

Not very dramatic, but a cheap, quick upgrade. Will give the backhoe a little more crowding power and on a few occasions a really full bucket of gravel or wet loam has stalled my FEL.

I bought a ready made gauge with quick connect from Aux-Hydraulics when I shimmed my old JDX485. Here's their link. Look under Products / Tools / Pressure Test Gauge. Pretty cheap if you're not into assembling your own.

Thanks for the replys guys. A hundred pounds more lift would be welcome. I want to lift a four cyd engine and trans axle into a pickup next.

Looking at the premade one from Aux-Hyd it seems to end in a male so would I then need the double female to make it a simple snap together operation or can I use the male end. I suppose if I call they can make it end in a female if I ask.

I guess what I don't know is the pressure side always the male end with these hydraulic systems.I am kind of new here but trying to learn.

Thanks.

Orange,

The site referenced for the prefab gauge is a John Deere site - not sure if couplings are compatible with other models. I used a female coupling for the gauge assembly in my case as the BX24 provides male couplings to feed the FEL lines on the valve side of the couplings. In such a case, if I was to use a male coupling on the gauge I would have to connect to the FEL lines and though you could get the same reading, you will be reading "through" a hydraulic piston and if bottomed on the gauge side to start you could get no reading ("0" psi is possible) - not as clean as testing directly off the FEL valve side. If you have a BX, the first post in this string is all you need to know.

If you make your own set up (2 wrenches, some teflon tape and 10 min) all the parts are available from Surplus who advertises on the home page of TBN. Get the coupling and shims from a dealer to make sure you have the correct ones.

I bought an inexpensive gauge at www.grainger and "Borrowed" a fitting from my backhoe...

Hmmm, first thing I noticed that really caught my eye was the pack of Slug-gos in the first picture. I can't find them anymore.

Hoses and seals will be unaffected by the pressure bump, probably valve and pump too but I can't promise. Many manufacturers place a lower max pressure rating to protect the mechanical parts of the machine.

Good eye Wayne,

Around August this summer someone found you could catch 125 lb blue fin tuna on 9" white Sluggos (couple dollars ) Vs dragging $150 + squid rigs behind your boat on the SW corner of Stellwagen bank (north part of Cape Cod Bay just off P-Town). They dissapeared off the shelves here overnight. We still can't figure what the tuna think they are as they match nothing around here.

Not to Hijack my own thread, but while I was doing the pressure relief bump up I filled all four tires with ballast - 11 gallons each rear turfs and 3 on the fronts, though probably didn't have to do the fronts. I used a small 12v pump and a venting valve I had laying around. Only about 3 - 4 coors lights worth of time. Also found the front axle low by 1.5 quarts - we have been warned about this on other threads - I suggest everyone check. I would hazard a guess it's due to techs not removing the vent bolt on the left and right gear hub before topping off - make sure you do - I also spun both wheels to make sure the hubs filled.

Good catch. I didn't even realize the Aux-Hyd gauge has a male end and my BX has female FEL ports. I was getting around to checking the PSI on my BX but didn't do it yet. Guess I'll have to pickup a female termination and just replace the existing male end. Orange, if you call them, Ron might just be able to send you the gauge with the compatible BX female coupling. He's a nice guy to deal with.
