( I couldn't find any automotive wire that was heavy enough and had enough conductors around here, and I was in a hurry to get the job done.)

Radio Shack sells 10 guage stranded wire appropriate for this application in both red and black.

Jim,
I think he was looking for a multi-conductor cable to run vs 3 single runs of stranded. I know you can get #14 2 conductor for trailer brakes, don't know if it comes in 3 conductor or not.

You can get 14/3 and 12/3 heavy-duty extension cords that have stranded wire and are very flexible and easy to route through all the parts of a tractor. It has been my experience that you can buy this wire cheaper by the foot as an extension cord and just cut off the plugs as opposed to going to an electrical contractor supplier and buying it from a roll. Of course if you need just a few feet it may cheaper overall to pay the higher price per foot and just buy what you need. Usually this type of wire is not high temperature grade wire but it is easy to route around anything hot on the tractor. If more conductors or a higher temperature wire were desired then the electrical contractor supplier would be your best bet, preferably one that caters to industrial contractors. The number and size of conductors available in wiring is almost unlimited. All you need is to find a supplier with what you want in stock and willing to sell a few feet off a roll to a non-contractor. This will vary with location with the greater chance of finding what you want in the larger cities.

Thats a good idea. I want something with heat tolerance as well as gas/oil protection. I'm sure that some industrial extension cable would handle both.

Charlie........please go down to your local auto parts store and spring for a couple rolls of 12 or 14 gauge automotive wire...Black or Red for the hot side and white for the negative side... why mess with electrical zip cord on a tractor. You can also get the plastic loom to put the wire in to protect it. This is the same product that Kubota uses in the tractor. If electrical cords were that good for automotive use, then the tractor manufacturers would use it in place of automotive wiring. Use the correct product for the job and it will look better and better yet, it will last longer and perform better in the end. While you are there, get some shrink wrap tubing and use it on all splices and terminal ends. The shrink wrap will protect the terminal ends from moisture intrusion. Personally, I would rather see a fuse closer to the point where you take the power from. Consider adding one fuse to protect the wire from point of origin to the plastic box. That way, if the wire gets damaged, the tractor wiring will be protected. There is something to be said about a job that is done by the owner that is done in a professional manner. You have done a great job on the rest of the install and it look very professional. Finish it up using the correct wiring materials and it will be a job that you can be really proud of. If you take your tractor in for service, the people that will work on it will be impressed by the quality of the work and the fact that it wasn't cobbled together.
One last thought.... put some silicone sealer around that chrome hole plug to keep the elements out... I hope that you take this advise in the good manner that it is intended..... I am passing on to you that which was hammered into my head by a friend and mechanic when I was very young..... Do it right the first time or make time to do it over a second time.... If you need any more help, advise, or other information, please ask, because that is what we are all here for.... to learn and share information... And that is something that you know better than me, because you have been here longer!

*L* yea, no problem, if i didn't want advice, i wouldn't ask! Actually, the chrome plug is siliconed as are all the other grommets and holes and I used shrink tubing at all connections as well. I put 25 amp fuses on both hot wires at the battery, so that is covered as well. The only thing I'm missing is the proper wiring going up to the battery. I will use whatever is rated for heat and oil/fuel resistant. I like your idea about the flexible covering, so I'm going to pick up some of that, too. Thanks for the idea! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
