Oil & Fuel BX oil change

   / BX oil change #31
Well I got it changed and did not remove the panels. The screws holding it on have plastic handles on them, and the brush-guard is held on by standard bolts like the picture above. Removing it wouldn't have been hard, but I wanted to leave them on. This summer I will take it off and give it a good once over - just too cold now.

You can do it on a BX if you can get the oil filter off. I find it a PITA to NOT remove the panels to do an oil change...Spend the 5 minutes and remove the (4) bolts on the guard and then the sides.

I made the mistake of having Messicks do a 50hr service, now i got a bill from them for $680.00 so make sure you learn how to do it your self!

Holly cow!!! 4 gallons of hyd fluid (retail is $80), hyd filter (retail is $11), 2 fuel filters (retail $6.50 each), 1 air filter (retail $18) 1-gallon of oil (retail $18)and and oil filter (retail $11)...

So, guess around $140 (give or take)...$680...I hope they used Kubota air in the tires!!!!:confused2:

Shop time for an auto/tractor/marine dealership is now $120 an hour, give or take. If you add pickup and return delivery, that's a chunk of change.
Fluid disposal fees, shop materials fee.

You cannot just add up what it would cost you to do at home.
Add it all up and I say again, that price is just about what others have reported here. Either one gets his own hands a little dirty, or you gotta pay the piper if your gonna do the dealer dance.

Any Dealer shop that can not do the BX 50 hour service in an hour or less needs to close. The only service I do any more is to my tractors. It takes more time to round up my tools and put them back than to do the service and I'm not fast and don't do it on a regular basis.
I'm waiting on the itemized bill to see if there were any extras or pick up and delivery. I don't remember seeing any others this high. Not saying there haven't been but I don't remember seeing any this high. I was thinking I saw one over the $400 mark and that seems, well I won't say criminal but I'm sure thinking it. There has to be something more than the 50 hour service on a BX to this bill.

..

Labour costs at Dealerships have been getting out of hand here in the
last 2 years . I quit using the LandRover Dealership and now use an
Indy . 6 month LR3 service went down from $545 to $286 , and all of
those "shop add-ons" you mention disappeared..... ummm .
Don't we all love comparing the parts vs. someone else doing the job ;)
We save 40 grand a year by eating at home BP :D

Didn't think these were changed at 50 ? You've got me thinkin' about
nitrogen tyre fill to combat the expansion though burn-outs on the
lawn  I just knew there was something I could tweek-up
for performance : Kubota Super Inert Tire Fill aerosol $ 99 plus tax (
good for 1 BX fill ) .... includes red valvestem dust caps :D

When the 50 hour was due on my BX2660, I was physically unable to do it, so I had my dealer do it and the cost was about $300. We hauled it up there.

Either my wife and I or my son and I now do all of the routine service on all of our tractors, ATV/RUV etc and save a bunch of money. None of this stuff is hard even if you have minimal skills and a few tools.

JOHNTHOIMAS has a very good write up on the 50 hour service for the BX.

I too am waiting for the itemization, if it comes. I'm guessing there was pickup and delivery to jack it that high. You are also right that doing it yourself just isn't difficult, nor does it require strange tools.

I do remember others complaining about their bill being that high. I'm not gonna go searching for them again, but I have a strong remembrance.

Some shops (marine, auto, farm) tell you right up front, on a big old sign; There is such a such an hour and some have 1 hour minimum, just to log it in. Not trying to defend as much as give warning. Know what you are doing when you ask any shop for service. My son works at a very pricey auto dealer's shop and they like to call it "brain surgery" pricing.

My brother was a tractor and auto mechanic for many years and they always went by the "Flat Rate", so no matter how long it actually took, each job cost a "Flat Rate", so you knew in advance what something was going to cost. I would think a 50 hour or such would be the same unless you have a really exceptional dealer. I don't know about the tractor shops, but I know in the ATV world the guy who does the maintenance chores is not necessarily a mechanic so the job you will do in many cases will be better than some "technician" at a dealer.

I'd sure like the particulars of this bill. There is more here than meets the eye. I'm gonna bet that Messicks shop hour rate is north of 100 an hour, but still, it doesn't add up. I don't care for the implication that Messick willy nilly just ripped somebody off.

The Messick family has been in business for three generations over 60 years. They wouldn't be in business if they gave stuff away, but neither would they be in business if they ripped people off.

Just throwing out the statement on a public forum that Messicks charged almost $700 for a 50 hour BX service without more information leaves me a bit dubious. There has to be more to this story.
