This may be an incredibly stupid question: But is it a bad idea to pretty much always use 4WD? Am I causing undo wear and tear on my BX2230 by never shifting into 2WD?

I would not use 4WD on pavement unless it is snow or ice covered. On grass or dirt is should be OK. The front and rear wheels may not turn at the EXACT same speed and a bit of slippage will occur. It should be able to slip easy.

Well, I don't have any pavement. I do have a "gravel" driveway, which I have to mow along with everything else, since it's probably been about 20 years since anybody put any gravel on it. I guess if I were going to drive to town, I'd want to shift into 2WD, but since town is 10 miles away, I'm not likely to do that anytime soon.

I recently put down about 60 tons of 3B gravel due to the 2B sinking into neverland or where ever it goes. I noticed a few scrapes and abrasions on the tires from the larger stones. My BX22 is over 3 years old and the tires are maybe 60% so I started to put it into 2WD on the gravel drive. Since the little excursion down the bank its pretty much in 4WD. I want to be around to buy new tires in a couple years.

Just wondering, have any of you guys ever accidentally bumped the gear selector out of gear and into neutral while on a hill?

That sounds very, very bad. I rely on the HST to keep speed under control since the brake itself is next to useless other than keepting the thing in one place while NOT being held in one place by the loader contacting the ground. And no, I have not had a paricular problem with accidentally manipulating the gear selector on the BX.

Happened to me once - We have a steep hill on our old country road and I was taking the tractor down to the bus stop to give my 4 year old a ride back up to the house.
I stopped on the hill to talk to neighbors and then put the tractor into neutral to start it, without my foot on the brake and it took off. I couldn' shiftit back into high or low and had to use teh brake to stop. Not a good feeling.

Over this weekend I moved a lot of dirt and stones on a steep hill. I paid attention and used 4wd and buckled up and kept everything low when traveling on the hill..

Hey, been there, done that (once and never again) I had a similar thrill ride in my BX23. Moderate downhill slope, unloaded with BH attached, accidentally left it in 2low weeeeeee, woooooo, down the hill. To call whats on the 23, brakes, is pretty generous. I would call them, stomp and pray. You would prob be better off with a Fred Flintstone setup, a hole on the floorboard so you could dig your heels into the ground. Yabba Dabba Doo.

I used to have a D18 wheelhorse in beautiful cond, this thing took off down hill while cutting grass on me half a dozen times, whew!! I felt **** in my paints each time, this is why I convinced the wife to get a BX23. 400 hours later and still in 4X4. I live on a very steep hill.
