BX Tire Alternatives?

Deere is selling HDAP (heavy duty all purpose) tires on the X series tractor. Same 26X12X12 size. I tried to google to find the supplier, but no luck. You want to be sure that the rolling circumfrence is the same as the turfs you've already got so as to not screw up the 4wd system. Might be worth calling the local JD dealer.

If I remember correctly a second set of tires & wheels for the BX was pretty darn cheap ($300?)

There are a plethora of tires out there. You just need to study up on them, so you ratio match properly on a 4x4.

Here are a couple links for tires.

When my R3 turf went out on my B8220, I wanted R4's. By reading up on them, I found the stock size Ag tire had the same rolling diameter as the R4 of same size. So, I went with the "stock" size R4(R4 was not specced for my mid-80's tractor).

Since I could not afford all four tires at once, I checked the front tires, R1 vs R3 vs R4. I found that the sizes specced stock all had the same rolling diameter. The front R4 had to be based off the R3 turf tire size.

I also found that even though all three front tires were the same diameter, the rear turf tire spec is 1.5 taller that the R4 or R1. That is interesting, since it affects the overall ratio matching. Since I have used the rear R4 with the turf tire, performance has been good, with no noticable binding. I even tested it by pushing the thing 25' while in 4x4(tractor shut off). It was easy to push, so there must not have been any gear bind.

If you poke around up/down these sites, you'll find good info on picking correct tires.

The bar tires on the BX used with a "small or moderate or token amount" of common sense are the way to go on the BX for nearly all uses. Yes, thanks, I like using three words where one will do. I should always remember that using words with more than three letters sometimes is confusing. J

Robert, rather than using the BIG word, plethora, one of our readers would wish for you to use a word like for example---lot's and lot's and lot's -- instead because he might confuse the plethora (excuse me, lot's and lot's) of letters in such a large and complex word and start quoting scholars of Abraham Lincoln again to determine it's useage. Jeeeeez. J

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I think you might not like R4 tires all that much on the BX but who knows 'till you try. They are very stiff. The R1 tires on the BX, unlike more typical R1 tires, are fairly fat and have a wide profile with a relatively soft sidewall. This provides a decent flotation footprint and explains why they seem to be pretty easy on lawns. If you try some R4's please let us know how they do for you, I do not much like them on my 2410 but the more typical--narrow profile and stiffer sidewall--R1 tires for those size rims seem inappropriate for my uses. I actually wish I had turfs on it. I have had, however, only a "modicum of schooling" on tire types so I admit I could be entirely wrong--about the tires. J

I switched to the Ag’s after using the turfs for a few months. If you spin a turf on wet grass, it will peel a patch of your lawn. The Ag’s will sometimes chafe a bit (leaving a slightly noticeable Ag pattern on the ground). The chafing heals after one rain. The patch left by the turfs needs replanted. The chafing only occurred for me on very dry ground. This surprised me since I was warned of the Ag’s on wet ground. I have never had a problem when the ground is wet enough to comply a bit. Conversely (that means the opposite of /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif ), the turfs damaged the grass mostly when it was wet. Go figure... If you want to use a loader, get the Ag’s, .. If you want to mow grass get the Ag’s,... If you want to plow snow (yes.. it's coming), get the Ag’s.
If you want to commute to work on dry pavement, I’d go with the turfs (and I suggest the rabbit speed).

TresCrows,

I'm sorry you didn't take the modicum thing as a joke. I didn't intend to offend anyone. With all the serious business going on in the world I like to mix a little humor with my everyday life. I apologize for my last post.

After reading Trescrow's posts above, I could not help but wonder if he ends he sentences in prepositions or not.

I think I'm going to try and convnice the dealer to do a little switcheroo...while the turfs are essentially "new".

Mine switched them for free with 10 - 15 hours on it.
They are reasonably priced if you have to pay, but once you go Ag's, you'l probably never bother putting the turfs back on.
