Years ago I had an old 70's chevy 4x4 once that easily went into four wheel drive but you absolutely couldn't get it out without backing up a few feet. Then it was easy. I guess that took care of binding and alignment of worn parts. I'm with Ron, I think its the nature of the the beast with gearing. His reply is well worth remembering. I think it will probably be more of a concern later when this newer equipment with seemingly tighter tolerances and probably lower quality metal begins to wear. I may be completely wrong on that and I hope that I am. I'm glad your tractor was an easy fix and I'm greasing my linkage tomorrow.

FWIW... My BX2350 doesn't like to shift from 4WD to 2WD if the front wheels are turned sharp. Straighten the wheels and it shifts just fine.

That is gear wind-up!

I have experienced this problem on my BX22, BX23 and BX24. Regular inspection of the linkages and periodic lubrication is the key to smooth, easy shifting.

This is a known issue and has been widely discussed here. The linkage, 2wd/4dw and the HI/LO linkage seem to bind. You can see them if you lift the seat (don't need to remove the tire), and use WD40 or another spray lube on the linkage. This will resolve nearly 100% of the issues.

Good advice. I thought for sure my tranny was broke, was bending the shift lever. Cleaned out the crud and gave it a blast of WD40. UNBELIEVABLE how smooth it works.

I had the same issue when my BX was relatively new.

It may have been widely discussed here, since I just bought my BX and, some of us are new here. Thought I would share my experience and help a fellow member solve his problem.

Who has time or wants to go through all of these threads when your tractor is down anyway? Much quicker to figure this out on my own. I like to know what makes my equipment tick.

I took the back tire off for other reasons, a change out from AG's to Turfs. I also prefer to take a close up look at my linkage and underside. Flipping the seat up might be sufficient for any quick access in the future. Thanks for the tip. ;)

If you tap the hydro pedal while applying light pressure to the range handle, the windup on the gears will be reduced and it will readily move between ranges.

The range transmission is not synchronized and some operators force the handle and bend the linkage or fork internally. Let the gears line up when engaging or move a little to change ranges.

Just take a little time and you can shift the range easily

My BX1830 goes through spells where it is extremely hard to get out of low range. It goes in and out of high range o.k. and goes into low range easy enough but pulling the lever out of low range is a bear. I'm afraid I'm going to break something. In the summer it began going in and out of low range very easily until I started using high range a lot while doing a project where I had to travel a distance. Hydro fluid is full and everything seems to be right. Thanks for any comments.
How do you like your BX1830?
I love MY BX 1500s

I love the BX1830. It's the right size for me. I notice you have a 48" tiller. Does this work good for you. Could you give me an idea of cost. I may be looking for a tiller. Thanks for comments.

So far it's great on my 2003 BX1500.
The new 48'' Tiller is a big up grade compared to the 40 year old Bolens with a 22'' tiller on it.
I can also use it on my BX23 or on my New BX1500.
I have $1100 in the tiller.
My local dealer wanted $1450 for a new 48'' tiller but I don't know what brand he priced me.
