BX22 Power loss- Possible causes?

My BX22 with 13 hours on it is suddenly losing power. Going up a small hill with only my rear mower attached and it will barely creep over the top and I get some black smoke as well (which stops as soon as I let off the pedal). Only did that twice before I shut her down.

Checked a couple of fluid levels hot and it seemed fine. Going to check everything I can think of today - any suggestions for things to pay attention to while doing this?

When you removed the backhoe, did you reconnect the hydralic line to the tractor? What about when you removed the FEL?

I did - with both. Have had both FEL and BH off for the last 8 hours or so with no problem until yesterday.

Fuel problems, perhaps? Or (dare I say it) the parking brake is on? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Although I have done equally stupid things in the past, it is not the parking brake.

Could bad fuel do this? How would I know?

Spent some time looking over everything today and I am stumped...looks like I'll be calling a dealer in the morning.

Check your 3pt lever and be sure it's centered. Sometimes they "stick" in the up or down position and that robs power.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were stupid! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif A lot of us here with BX2200's (myself included) have discussed accidently leaving the parking brake on while driving around. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I just thought it was worth a mention, no offense intended.

( Could bad fuel do this? How would I know?) Bad fuel can rob power but how you tell is beyond my expertice.

I had one other thought, my BX isn't wild about climbing hills in high range, and of course pushing the hydro pedal further down only makes the problem worse. If you were in high gear try the same thing in low and see what happens.

Don't worry, I didn't think you were implyng anything! Actually I would have been thrilled if that had been the problem.

Actually I didn't notice any power loss in high gear, it is low gear that is causing me the problem.

Alas, my baby is due for a trip to the dealer...I'll let you all know what happened when I find out. Thanks for the input!

I own a bx22 and my driveway is pretty steep I have tried going up the hill in high gear and the tractor stopped. So I had to apply the break and put it in low range. The breaks don't seem too strong. it wants to roll backwards unless I really apply a lot of pressure on the break. Of course with the back hoe attached and the loader the tractor is carring a lot of weight. David

Seeing your low hours on the machine made me think of a problem I had with my L3130 right after I got it. I was heading down a rural public road around a lake across from my home.. first trip off the property.. and there are plenty of hills along this road.. I noticed that I kept losing power going up the hills, had to shift down into low range for hills that didn't seem that steep.. had me baffled. I wrote up the problem on the forums here and I got a response that solved it quick. The 3130 is my first experience with a Hydrostatic transmission. I was pushing the pedal down like an accelerator while going up the hills.. looking for more power.. and in effect.. shifting UP into a higher gear! I learned quick that when you go uphill with an HST.. you let up on the pedal to go into a lower gear.

probably not YOUR problem.. but you never know!
