I changed the oil in my front axle yesterday. Most of oil drained from the first side that I removed the drain plug from. Upon refilling with oil, I assumed that the new oil would freely pass to the other wheel and equalize. I ran the tractor a little while around a sloping area try to get an equal amount of oil to the other wheel. Upon re-checking the oil levels, there was still over an inch of difference between the oil levels on each wheel. Will this eventually even up or do I need to try to add oil to each side evenly?

The WSM indicates to fill from both sides and have the breather plugs removed. On the BX23 there's breather plugs on both sides, I'm not sure about the 2200.
It also indicates to run the tractor for about 10 minutes then check again.

Volfandt has it right. You must remove the vent and fill from both sides.

Where are the vents located please? I may have overfilled the front axle and oil is dripping on the floor. I have just changed the pinion seal. image.jpgimage.jpg

The vents are those bolts that are on what looks like a brake housing. They are almost blocked by the tire.

You can see one in the first photo over by the tire on the right side.

I fill from both sides until the oil starts coming out of the vents. It will take a while before the oil seeps into all of the nooks and crannies so check the level again after five, or so, hours.

You'll have to find out where the oil is dripping from since the front axle is supposed to be a completely sealed system once all the plugs are secured. There is no overflow valve that I'm aware of. Hope it is not a power steering leak!

Thanks very much for the info, I'll put it to good use.
I've already replaced the hydraulic steering hoses . I've also replaced the forward universal joint on the drive shaft to the front axle, however when I engage 4wd , there is a vibration feedback through the steering along with a clunky feel. The rear universal joint feels ok but maybe it needs replacing also. Any ideas?

I don't have BX tractor, but the owner manual for my L5450 says that too much back and forth play in the front differential case can cause vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel. On my tractor there is an adjusting screw on the front differential carrier.

Do you feel the vibration while driving? If so you may need to adjust the toe-in and or the axle pivot.

Vibration occurs only in 4wd whilst on the move. I'm away from home for 3 weeks, so will investigate further when I return. Thanks for your suggestion.

I realize this is over a year old, did you find out what was causing the vibration? I have a similar problem (driveshaft dropped out a few times) fixed that, now when in 4wd (and only in 4wd) there is a vibration that I can feel through the steering wheel, and sometimes in the whole tractor. Not really a bit shimmy, just a vibration.

Thanks!
