I've borrowed my neighbors post hole digger which has a 12" auger that will dig to 42". If you want to dig deeper you have to dig a trench for the drive shaft. It will bottom out on the ground if you go over 42" with it.

Dave, for some reason or other, that picture comes through so dark for me that I can't tell anything about it. The ones I've used were a brand new Bush Hog (don't remember a model number) on a TC29D New Holland and a couple of very old ones (but still worked well). One was on an 85hp Oliver and the other on a Deere that I think was about the size of the Oliver.

Dave, I just had a quick look at Bush Hog's web site and all their augers are 48" (of course, you ain't gonna get the entire thing down into the hole) and then they have optional 8" and 12" extension kits for all of them.

Bird,

I'll have to measure tonight to see how long the auger is and the length of the mast.

I guess Ive finally come to the conclusion that I will need to adjust my fencing strategry. I will cut them off at 7 feet long and bury them 3 ft instead of 4. I will also lower the recommended tension.

The fence should still be adequate for our dogs, goats and other small animals. Anyone have a suggestion for a good, inexpensive fence for horses/cattle that doesnt need to have the posts burried 4 ft?

I used goat and sheep fence .About 60 dollars a role.If i remember rite its 300ft per.Its 36in. high, with 2 strands of barb wire on top 6in spread.Total of 48in.tall.If i had it ta do over i would go with barbless wire on top.Raised a 750LB steer,3 donkeys.barbados sheep, pigmy goats,3 eastern turkeys, ducks, guinies couple dogs and a few cats. The goats will go under if they find a spot to but every thing else stays home unless a coyote or owl dines on something.I put the t-post 9ft apart.6-footers.And a good streach post about 100ft. apart.Your corners gotta be very solid.Well, the turkeys will get out if they fly into the yard instead of the pasture when they fly from night roost, just open the gate and let em back in.They can be a little protective around strangers sometimes, they sure are pretty when they strut and drum

Thanks! Sounds like a good idea. I have bought 2 rolls of high tensile wire, but they wont last long for all the fence I'll be putting in. I figure it will hold a few goats and other small animals in at a lower tension that speced.

I'll just switch to the new method after the goat pen is done. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I hadnt really considered rolled fencing because noone around here could say if it would keep a cow or horse in (without injury to the animal).

I used eight foot 4 x 6 PT posts, buried them 3 feet. I used four sixteen foot 1 x 6 rails between them for our horses. However, the horses pushed on the top of fence to get to whatever they were interested in on the other side. So, I had to run electric tape (http://www.horseguardfence.com) along the inside top of the fence to prevent this.

Sounds like a pretty expensive fence. Any idea what it cost you per foot?

It's been too long ago to remember the cost. The section where I used the 4 x 6 posts was a small section around our paddock. One of our horses kept jumping the 4.5 foot high fence that was there. The larger fenced in area uses half round (6" diameter) PT posts with rough sawn oak rails. The guy that put this fence in first tried to use a post driver on the front of a tractor to pound the posts into the ground. Then he tried a post hole digger, also on a tractor. All this in the middle of a hot, dry summer. It did not work out so well so I have quite a few posts that are not all that well anchored nor are they very deep. So, eventually I will be replacing them as well as lobbying the family finance department for a post hole digger, which I will be sure to use in the spring or fall, not in mid-summer when the ground is as hard a concrete.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd use 4 x 4 PT posts (cheaper than 4 x 6) and 4 strands of the electric fence tape. Much less maintenance.
