BX2230, splitters and hydraulics

Need a splitter, and I'm torn between buying

1) standalone 27 ton from TSC OR
2) 3 point splitter and adding a northern tool PTO hydraulic pump to drive it.

Price is a wash, so I am wondering if there is anything else I would use that PTOpump for, or would it be as single use as the motor on the splitter?

If price is a wash, I think the stand alone would be better. 27 tons is more than the 3pt (a guess /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif). PTO pumps are not that quick to change out..... but could be. Also, after you split wood you can have your tractor's FEL ready to fill with firewood. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Over the past few months, as I have started doing more and more with my BX, I am regretting not buying it with a FEL.

Oh well. I do have a cutesy little trailer to pull behind it, but then I have to climb the stairs with the wood. If I had a FEL, I could raise it up to the deck 1 bucket at a time.

I wondered about if you had one /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Another point that has been made before is: do you want another engine to take care of? If not, the 3pt splitter might be the way to go.

Normally I say go with PTO power, but in the case of a splitter (especially on a BX) go with the stand alone.

Even at PTO rpm (wide open) the hydraulic flow is so low that you will be old and grey before you get the first log split. Cycle time will be in minutes verses seconds on the stand alone unit.

Just an opinion.
