I have been digging out a couple of pretty big stumps from two pine trees we cut down last year ( trunk about 24" in diameter ) and have found that the BX23 has a hard time on some of the larger roots - I thought about going the chainsaw route to cut the roots and tried using my Sawzall to cut some roots but ended up spending $20.00 at Home Depot for an axe and have found that it works pretty darn good. Plus it is a lot cheaper than sawzall blades or a chainsaw. Put a sharp edge on it and make sure you don't cut your foot off. Even on larger roots - some of them almost 10" in diameter I usually only have to chop partway thru then I use the backhoe to break them out.
