Yesterday afternoon I started digging out the poplar tree stump. Last month I cut down the tree since it was getting too big, and I hated the white cotton crap pluggin up the skimmer in my pool. I only spent maybe 3 hours just chipping away the dirt between the roots so I can cut them away later today. The stump is larger then 12 inches as you can see from the pictures. I put the BH bucket on the stump to get the general size of stump. Its supposed to be hot today, and I am hoping to get it out by noon. I'm gonna get started now after this post and get out there and refuel and grease joints.

I guess you can tell I am having fun. :D

Curling of the bucket is your friend when it comes to snapping roots. Just when it does not want to come out as easily as one would think be careful not to get to the point where you break something.

That is a good sized stump for that little backhoe.

Next time you cut one down, leave 4-5 feet of stump. This gives you leverage to pull it out.

Another thing is to use the bucket tooth to tear apart a root as opposed to trying to break the entire root at one time.

If you have a 4 wheel drive truck, that might work better at poping it out of the ground than the BX, once you get as many roots cut as you can. I dug one out a little smaller than that with the end loader of my BX, and I had a pretty good sized hole when I was done.

I'm thinking you could really use a BH thumb right about now.

Thinking back on the stumps I've dug out, I can't imagine getting by without one... indispensable for grabbing and ripping on the roots. On the smaller roots you get sort of a scissor effect that just chews right thru them. Real timesaver.

A man with a back hoe rig like that has no interest in pulling anything.

That's a pretty good size stump for a BX.
Let us know how it goes. Good Luck.

Here's my stump vs. man and tractor pix. I found this old white pine to be the limit of the little BX. It took about 8 hours of digging and hand sawing the vertical roots under the stump that the bucket teeth couldn't reach to remove it from the hole.
