My BX24 (~800 hrs) has developed a problem steering that I hope folks can help me debug.

I can smoothly turn the steering wheel round many times and get no front wheel movement, while if I quickly "jerk" the wheel in a direction, the front wheels turn as directed. This happens while both moving and not moving.

I've changed the steering hydraulic fluid (using SuperUDT). It wasn't low on fluid when I went to drain it.

Any other things I should be checking? Is this something people have seen before?

Thanks.

Most of the BX steering problems I have heard of were either a broken hose or the seals in the cylinder.

The BXs have one hydraulic pump, the flow goes through a priority valve that diverts all available flow to steering at low idle and as flow increases excess goes to hydraulic loader and 3pt functions. The orbital steering valve controls flow when engine is running but becomes a pump when engine is off so that steering is available with high effort. Some others may be able to contribute more on diagnosing steering valve and cylinder issues better then I can.

It sounds like the steering cylinder seal is bad for sure. Very common on the early BX machines.

I just did a BX 1800 tonight that if you turned the wheel slow the wheels didnt turn at all but if you truned the wheel fast it worked fine. the issue was the steering cylinder I rebuilt it. the center piston seal was not sealing. All good now.
