Actually, no. The rear tires should have most of the flex out of them, but should still be on the ground for maximum stability. Front bucket should be filled to the max and rolled back. YMMV

Whenever I watch commercial BH's in operation the 1st thing I look for is to see if the wheels are off the ground and to a T it seems that 99.9% all have their wheels off the ground. Sometimes you can even see the rear wheels slightly spinning. Sometimes they'll have them high enough to slide a brick or two under the tires......

As for me it depends on what & where I'm digging. If I'm digging a trench that I do as much moving as I do digging I generally put the HST in neutral, leave the brake off and slightly raise all 4 wheels. This way I can easily use the BH to move the tractor.

If I'm digging in the same spot for awhile I may or may not put the HST in neutral or engage the brake, as I will still slightly raise the wheels with the outriggers & FEL. If the dirt is too soft to keep the wheels up then I'll put the HST in gear and set the brake.
It all depends on the situation for me.

When I'm just useing the BH for lifting I may or may not lower the outriggers and use the FEL and engage HST & brake to keep the tractor still.

WHEN the front bucket is edge down in the dirt and the wheels are off the ground the tractor doesnt move. The kubota manual says this.Three point stance: one fel, two stabilizers. They do say take most pressure off your tires, but when you do a little digging you end up re adjusting, because your down riggers have sunk.I jack her right up from the get go.-3 point stance, when tires touch ,you bounce,at least on my tractor.

I leave in N with the thought I get more hydraulic power to the BH.

Should the speed range lever for the transmission be set to neutral when back hoeing.

I find that the tractor is difficult to move immediately after back hoeing if I leave the speed range level in low. Once I get the tractor moving (put the throttle at 2500 rpm) the tractor runs just fine.

Is this a problem then others have seen?

Neutral for me. I tried to move with the trans in low and seat in backhoe position the tractor stalled,The seat needs to be down in the driver position.
