I don't think it will run quietly or very long with a bent piston rod. Broken piston rings would also produce lasting adverse effects.

A puff of white smoke or "steam looking" smoke usually indicates a leaking head gasket. After shutdown the pressure in the cooling system leaks a bit of anti freeze into a cylinder. Burns off when first started. If real bad it will blow water out the exhaust. If real, real bad will cause hydro lock when trying to start.

A blown head gasket or damaged head gasket could have been caused by starting the engine partially hydro locked.

I know nothing about the value of this machine. If you think it's a lot cheaper than normal, such as 60-70% of normal, go for it.

Contact a Kubota dealer and ask them what it would cost you to have the head gasket replaced?

My answer is simply can you afford to loose on this deal? It might work out great or it could turn out to be costly. Are you able to do more advanced work on the tractor yourself or would you need the dealer do something like an engine swap? I'm thinking worst case is you will need a long block if the engine goes. The next question is "is it down on power"? Just saying it starts up and runs fine doesn't really answer if a few of the ponies have gotten out of the pasture. Lower than normal compression doesn't mean the engine will not run. But it could mean that it's not making all the power it should. Small SCUTs don't have lots of extra horses to begin with. So if it's lost a few it could impact what you want to do with it.
