Sorry for the double post. Not sure If hydraulic fluid was changed at 50 hours. Fluid looks clear and good but probably change it to be sure. Good point

The best way to tell if the fluid was changed is to look at the filter. Factory original is gray, replacement is white. There is a surprising amount of junk left in the transmission when assembled. The suction screen will catch the big stuff and the filter the small stuff till it gets full and goes into bypass.
The fluid should look clean and clear with no burnt smell.

As a rule for me I change all fluids on used equipment when I get it so I know where to start the maintenance cycles.

Can the suction screen be removed and cleaned without completely draining fluid?

Not likely. The filter can be change with a vacuum sucking through the fill hole. Not sure if it would work on the suction screen. You could pull the suction screen and quickly plug the hole with a rubber stopper. You would loose some fluid.

Maybe just collect the fluid in a clean drain pan and filter it when you put it back in. It should hold around 2 1/2 gallons of fluid.

The tractor has been in storage since I've had it so I wasn't sure if the original trans fluid filter was on it so I checked it today and confirmed it has the original grey filter. so apparently the 50 hour service wasn't done. I will change fluid, filter and clean screen and hope it helps. Thinking it may need control valve adjusted so I will try to research how to do that.

I timed how quickly the boom dropped...2 inches in 15 minutes with engine off (I had to leave otherwise I would have tested for a longer period). Don't know how much drop is normal. Guess it still wouldn't nesassarily indicate which was the culprit, the boom cylinders or the control valve? Thanks

Excuse me for being easily confused. Earlier you said, "As soon as I let go of the joystick it will lower back to the ground." Well, is it sagging immediately or 2 inches in 15 minutes, which is hardly immediate? Or does the additional weight of holding the front end up make it sag faster?

Drooping 2 inches in 15 minutes is probably more than mine drops, but really, a guy could get his work done using the bucket and never even notice that.

If the added weight is making it worse, you've definitely got some internal leakage that needs attention. As you say, both the cylinders and the control valve would be prime suspects. I don't think the control valve is "adjustable". If it's leaking internally, it needs to be repaired/re-built.

Like Grandad4 said, it will slowly drop over time but it should be able to lift the front end and hold it there for a while. I do this with mine all the time.
But if I have the loader in the air when I shut it off, it will usually be on the ground by next day, same for the 3pt too.

Sorry for the confusion...I was testing it 2 different ways. With the engine running the loader will easily lift the front of the tractor off the ground but the second I Release pressure on the joystick it will lower to the ground quickly. For the second test I raised the bucket up about 2 feet off the ground and turned the engine off to see how quickly the loader would sag. Sag was 2 inches in 15 minutes. My thought was if the spool valve that controls the boom was out of adjustment fluid may be sneaking by the valve when I release the joystick?? Just a theory.

Thanks for the everyone's input

In your first test it sounds like the loader is going into the "float" position instead of the neutral, or "hold", position. Float is supposed to be activated by going past a "detent", or slight resistance, in the joystick when pushing up to lower the loader arms. Is the float working correctly? Are you ALSO getting float when the joystick is in the center, neutral position?

Grandad4, I've just not been around it enough to know yet. I will be at my storage unit over the weekend so it will experiment more. I don't really notice a detent when pushing the joystick forward but again it may be that I don't know the machine well enough yet. If it's going into float I would think there would be a linkage adjustment for the spool valve as I mentioned in my previous post. Piedmont NC is beautiful. Thanks again
