In your experience what vehicles in the military do not use diesel or JetA? What about commercial? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

( I mean military and commerical will not go diesel for a lonnnnng time, if ever. )

The reality is that there is ALLOT more diesel utilization in both the military and private commerical sectors than there is in the public transportation market, the number of diesel powered high mileage passenger cars in North America is abysmal....... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

yes aircraft. I work with Pratt, Royals and GE and diesel is not even in the future since we need to years to design an engine (jet).

concets died hard my friend.

Again engines on heli and jets will not burn diesel for a long time, if ever. We would know since we design them for many air frames and companies.

We need to know about 8 to 10 years before firt roll out.

You mean they are not buring any middle distillate?

What fuel are they all using then?

/ By Land, Sea, & Air - Diesel Powers It ALL #16
yes, they are but it is more indept then that. non -military can be Jet A-1 and Jet A, both are kerosine type fuels. not AvGas

Military use Jp4, 5 and 8.

Again it goes way deeper. Fuels need to conform to MIL-PRF-5624S, British Specification DEF STAN 91-88 AVTAG/FSII and a NATO code.

JP8 needs to conform to MIL-T-83188D, etc etc.

They are many more but that is the simple part.

My understanding is that GE and Rolls already build commerical engines that run on either natural gas or diesel for electrical generating purposes. See Nuevo Pignone generating.

as they do but they are far and few between.

My point is that the "norm" will not be changed for sometime in the jet world (air). There comes a lot more things into play then just the fuel. You need to look at systems, electronics, weight, reliability, etc.

I wish they would change since jet fuel adds about 600,000 kilograms of particulate matter into the atmosphere
each year.

The problem or issue is who pays for this re-design? Military, Commerical, business making the product? It is a lot of up front cost to pay for something that is tested with millions of flying hours, that works.

Unless they need to change, they will not.
