Buying Advice Cabela's selling Compact Tractors

LS builds (or did for Tier 3) Mitsubishi licensed engines which also ran flawlessly. I don't know that I've seen a single problem problem reported here on this forum, in any of the LS built machines (including LS, NH, Case, etc), with their engines. I'm not really sure what problems you have with that. If the engine is built to license specs, it's possible that another Mitsubishi engine, that's branded as a Mitsubishi engine, could have been built by a company like LS, and not even actually made in a specific Mitsubishi factory.

fascinating. No, I have no problem with it, just need a scorecard to keep up.
I think "built to licensed specs" is the key, who is controlling the final product quality.
Frankly after sixty years of "constant improvement" manufacturing, I think these Asian engine and whole tractor
manufacturers have surely proved themselves. Great products. And guess what, Briggs, Kohler and Cat didn't step
up meaningfully to meet the small diesel tractor market. But Kubota and Yanmar did. Perkins did too.

PowerPro Equipment | Customer Focus is our Definable Difference!
I put my zip code into the TYM dealer lookup and these folks popped up.
I find it interesting that one has to really search to find TYM, and they took TYM on after
already representing Mahindra. Bet the Mahindra rep didn't like that.

I've never heard of these people, guess they have their roots in equipment rental.

If I decided on a TYM, I would feel more secure buying from a local Cabela's. Of which there are none.
But if there were...

My closest TYM dealer also sells LS.

Interesting thought while mulling "customer focus is our definable difference".
Isn't Cabela also saying the same thing?

If your product is not well known, one must promote customer service to create
at least an illusion of "it's ok, we'll take care of you" regardless of what engine is in the tractor.
And if a company can walk the walk in that regard, they don't have to be the least expensive.
Nor would a reasonable person expect them to be.

Just don't sell me an LT for a Denali price, plus some nice decals and a well crafted introduction video.
None of us are that dumb.
We all remember to ask "where's the beef?"...

"The list prices on the Cabelas tractors are so high that they are going to scare of potential customers. $22,899 for a 35hp tractor without a loader is high.Cabela's Wildlife & Land Management ROPS LM35H Hydrostatic Tractor : Cabela's I believe that tractor is a TYM T353H. Here is one with a Loader. http://www.tractorhouse.com/listings...x?OHID=8286789

So, for an extra $9000 ($5k in tractor, +/- $4k for loader) you can get a TYM painted green with some steel shields that has "Cabela's" on the side. This is what I'm talking about. It is not a superior product but it does carry a superior price tag. That extra $9k-$10k is for superior service? Well, let me say that these "service centers" must be wonderous, magical places where dreams come true. I mean, are they pulling off "Manhattan Project" class stuff in these places because the customer service I have gotten at Cabela's has been at best average and most times below that. That's the primary reason I have really quit visiting them and their prices are no better than anywhere else on most things.

Interesting enough, I did a search for Cabelas tractors and this little sight popped up: Cabela's Inc. Layoffs - TheLayoff.com. Apparently that's a sight where the recently laid-off can go and vent about their experience and with Cabela's doing some recent retail layoffs there are some ex employees talking shop. Here's a relevant one:

I think the reason is...
Because they are opening way too many stores way too fast given this economy, and also a major strategic screw-up in getting into tractor sales. They spent millions on those tractors and adding sales and support for that and those tractors are just sitting there and not selling and killing Cabela's financially. They are desparately trying to keep stockholders from seeing the results of this screwup and trying to cut expenses any way they can...."

Hmmmmm........

Yes we are, collectively. Marketers bank on it. Remember during the PU truck and SUV craze, where some buyers insisted on Cadillac or Lincoln trucks/SUV's, even though neither company had ACTUALLY made a single such product in their history?

Cabela's early success might just be those type of buyers. A thin market, probably, and eventually they will need the rest of us to justify staying in this market. So the rest of us will want to know more, like the unanswered question by 94Bullitt: what kind of testing did you do? Hard information on a message board will go a lot farther than corporate hyperbole* and mission statements.

*something to the effect that the head of Cabela's actually owns a Cabela's tractor. (probably so would everyone else if his/her cost were the same.)

That was an interesting find.

It sounds like Obamacare is hurting them with all the "restructuring"/ getting rid of full time and older employees they are doing.

"That was an interesting find."

Yeah, looks like some upheaval and unhappiness in their retail. Employees told LIFO (Last In First Out) about the cuts and then it wasn't the case per the handed down directives. Some long-termers shown the door in favor of part-time and regulars making less.

So, look for "service" to improve at your local Cabela's. Oh, and, their tractor department should be awesome too.

And, I'll add further.

Cabela's is being poorly advised with this advent into the tractor market. People who buy tractors (or automobiles) do not buy them from retail outlets. They buy them from dealers. People who are heavily vested in a brand or organization and emblazon that wide and far in the process. A retail outlet does not demonstrate the commitment and long-term needed in a major big-ticket purchase. If Cabela's were to offer a "Cabela's Pickup" based upon the F150 for sale at their stores it would not do very much. Gimmicky. Not their expertise. I'll just go down the road and buy a real F150 from the Ford dealer. Warranty and all that are so much clearer and more enforceable.

Same with tractors. Only those who know little to nothing buy a tractor from a retail outlet. Northern Tool has been offering various ChiCom tractors for years and it's gotten them just exactly nowhere in the market. So, Cabela's is marketing this tractor to those who don't know a heck of a lot about tractors, but, can be duped in their stores. That's all and that's a really small part of the buying public. People who know and understand the tractor market know you need a local dealer and an investment on their part. Not a marketing scheme.

It sounds like an OEM talked them into this and the retail arm of Cabela's doesn't know it's arse from a hole in the ground. All said as a prospective customer and all..
