Don't butcher the name...
It's L.S.Starrett, Athol, Mass (pronounced 'A thole')......
You can buy a new LLStarrett 6" dial caliper (stainless) for less than a hundred bucks from MSC or about any supplier. With reasonable care. they will outlast you.
For general use, you don't need any precision measuring tool more accurate than one thousandth of an inch... 0.001
Any tighter measuring tolerance is just a waste of money.
RCBS and Hornady branded calipers are Fred Fowler. Also a good caliper and IP54 rated (water resistant) in the encoder models (digital).
I own some very nice Fred Fowler IP54 rated digital micrometers that check against my Webber Croblox Standard at 0.0001 regularly.
Brown and Sharpe (Browne and Sharpe)'s tool line is basically all swiss and German made now.
Basically everyone in the precision instrument business is ANSI rated and certified.
The only measuring tools that will be inherently inaccurate are the bargain basment, crudely made crap that HF, Northern Tool and flea markets sell as 'bargains'. They aren't ANSI certified and should be avioded.
