Curious about you LEOs out there - would you want the help?

Of course, we/they would appreciate help. They may or may not need it, but even at my age, if I saw an officer in a scuffle with someone, I'd have to see if I could help.

Bird,
My Dad was a PO for 22 yrs. then was a Deputy Sheriff for another 10 yrs. I know he was helped by civilians on several occasions. I guess that is a large part of my motivation. That, and I think it is the right thing to do.

You just have to be careful.

The officer is not going to know if you are Friend or Foe. So be careful.

A few years ago an off duty officer was killed by two in service officers. The two officers were fighting with a subject. The off duty officer saw the fight and ran to help...

For some reason the off duty officer pulled his service weapon....

So now he was running with a drawn weapon towards two officers who are in a fight....

The officers did not know he was an off duty officer and just saw the threat of the pistol and they shot him.

The off duty officer was inexperienced. I do not remember anything from the incident that required a drawn weapon. It was a simple fight when the off duty officer went to help and there was no need for a drawn weapon.

So be careful.

The wifey and I have discussed this situation. Years back we drove past a bunch of officers along I95 in the middle of the night. Blue lights everywhere. Two officers had just been shot and killed. We missed the shooting by 30 minutes or so. One less potty break or a slightly earlier start and we could have been there when the fight broke out.....

The wifey knows to do what I tell her. Period. No discussion. Just DO. She is to head to the next exit and wait for a phone call from me. Make a call to 911 on the way if possible. After 10-15 minutes head back my way. Carefully. Reality is that if she has not heard from me in 15 minutes she may not want to go back.

There is risk. :D

Later,
Dan

You've sure got that right, Dan. You'd have to be careful, and I would have thought even an inexperienced officer, out of uniform, would have known not to pull a gun in the sight of other officers with whom he was not well acquainted.

A cop friend of mine likes to tell the story about confronting a fella who was walking up and looking in windows late at night. Friend was talking to the bad guy when he went crazy and started swinging. The next thing my friend knew was he was fighting for his life.

"Senor you okay, senor you okay" was what my friend heard as this little fella jumped into the middle of it and, according to my friend, did all the damage to the bad guy. My friend says the little guy was gone after it was all under control but that little guy, "senor you okay?" was a life saver.

I do believe how we react is instinctively when confronted by such situations. Some will instinctively react violently, others won't.

People call them in but they get out the next day, sometimes dozens of times. There aren't any real consequences to driving drunk it seems. :(

The parents should try to teach their children more, don't leave it to the rest of us.

I understand the sentiment. See a lot of folks prosecuted for driving on a revoked license here. Problem is the license was revoked for DUI. Next problem is the number on probation and the probation office can't tell you where half of them are.

Tennessee recently adopted an ignition interlock statute for DUI's. Will have to see how it works out. The wife of the sponsor of the bill was nearly killed by a DUI, and I think he's pretty determined to get DUI's off the road.

I'd just hope the cop wouldn't think I was coming to the aid of the bad guy.

I was told by a state trooper that about 1 out of 5 Michigan drivers lack a license. I was surprised at a guy I went hunting with. I knew him for years, never knew that he hadn't had a license since he was 18. And he was 38. He would get pulled over every few years, pay some fines, and go back to driving. One time he was driving past a seat belt inspection station, and the officer knew him, and pulled him over. This kind of thing has been a problem for years. My wife got hit 20 years ago, by a guy driving backward down our dirt road. Absolutely falling down drunk. Totaled her truck, the guy had 130 points!!! He was driving a van registered to his sister. Basically, we don't have enough jail space for all the idiots.
