My place has been a never ending, ongoing project too. Unfortunately, I tend to get it wrong the first two times, and hopefully I'm doing better on my third time. Fencing is the best example of getting it wrong. What has surprised me more than anything is the amount of time I spend working on my equipment. I have a small shop, but it's just big enough for my tools. I should of built a big shop first, and then the house, roads, fencing, pastures, barn and everything else afterwords. I had no idea how much time I would spend trying to figure out why it's not working, how to fix it, were to get the parts and then actually doing the repairs. And that's faster, easier and cheaper than finding somebody to do it for me.

For this property, one of the priorities needs to be a building to store and repair everything. Once you buy a tractor, it's just a matter until something breaks on it. Maybe something simple like a busted hose, or something more involved. Whatever it is, fixing it will become the most important thing that has to be done right away. Having a place to do this, no matter the weather, and a place to have all your tools, is just about the most important thing when owning land.

Ever hear of or use a composting toilet? I think they have evolved somewhat over the years. If my septic failed inspection up there I was considering one at least temporary. Til I either saved the funds to hire or find the time and attempt to build a new Septic system myself. Unfortunately with so much rock over there I doubt you'd pass a perk test.

More like Mike Morgan, sponsored by Jackery.....
Does that mean it won't work? Arly's already said there's no way to get power to the building which only leaves two options (plus this one): ICE powered generator or a solar system. If you don't want the hassle/noise of an ICE generator and don't want to mess around with solar panels and batteries, this might be a viable option for a place where you're only staying a couple of days at a time.

For the road I’d get a couple loads of what is known as oversized gravel here. It a little larger than your typical gravel, roughly 3 inch sized, and has no fines. You can have that dumped in your parking area and dump some in the bad spots on your road on. I’m guessing with some careful evaluation and maybe a couple of smaller culverts you can get the road in so you can drive a pickup in.

You’re used to doing this with trail maintenance but now you’ll have a tractor for it. 👍
We do have the contact for the local dirt n gravel operation.

I use the humanure handbook system daily, Humanure Handbook Home Page

I also have a certified Sunmar compost toilet. The World Leader In Composting Toilets

Here is a couple other compost toilets and a blog post about them if interested. The 3 Best Composting Toilets for Tiny Homes & Small Spaces

The owners used a 1000 watt Honda generator but they also had a little solar panel on the roof charging one, deep cell battery connected to some lights. We have two H generator's and will bring one out with ourselves over the weekend and stay there. If the forecast is dry anyway..... We need to get out there and stay overnight to see what's really there and see how it works for us. There is a outhouse out there.

It was a comment on the YouTube channel, not the Jackery. It’s a viable option depending on needs. I dumped my Honda gas gen for a battery pack “generator”, just from a different manufacturer. I love it, unlike the Honda which never would start when I needed it. Not ever, not once. Total garbage unless you use them all the time.

Now wait a cotton picking second, you can bad mouth a YouTube channel, or the Jackery and similar, but you dont get away with bad mouthing Honda. :)

I'm not sure how many kWh his Jackery has, but my house has battery backup, 30kWh worth. How far does that go? If pretty much everything is off, my house is still pulling (according to my setup's monitor) 700-900W... of course, we do have two refrigerators and two freezers. As a result, running purely on battery (ie, assuming no solar replenishment), we'd make it a bit over 24h.

If I had just the fridge and the well, and judicious use of lighting (all LED, of course), I think you could expect to run about 300-400 W on average, so 24h would cost you ~8-9kWh.

I see a portable-ish Jackery that's "3600plus", and a "5000 plus". Assuming the 5000 (he is sponsored after all), and the fact that you don't want to go below 5%, that's 4.75kWh usable. So yes, you could run a small house (fridge, well, and a few lights) between solar times (~12h), assuming you've got enough solar to run during the day plus enough to recharge the battery unit (not in the middle of the woods...).

I have enough solar to recharge and use... as long as it's not dark winter (I've seen solar recharge close to zero for a day). I have "plans" (ie on my honeydo list... yeah) to install a propane generator (with its own independent tank so I can't accidentally use up my home cooking & heating gas) which can be used to top off the batteries in case of an extended winter storm power failure, but it's not needed for late spring through early fall here, as long as I leave the AC and hot tub turned off during grid outages.

So, if this was my place, for power, I would likely get a 5000W, multi fuel, inverter generator (HF has a pretty good one) with the propane set up. I just dont think I would want to leave it there for months unattended; so going too big becomes a pain. Id run propane stove/heat, hot water, ect.

I see the battery back up stuff as good too, as a supplement to that.

But, we all have different ideas of what they want of a cabin. Me, camping is primitive, but I want a cabin to be a comfortable, relaxing place for a week or two at a time. I dont want to eat camp food for a couple weeks, or MREs... I want hot coffee, cold beer, and good food, and I want to be comfortable when I sleep, and able to shower when I want.
