IHC TD9 has 2 separate fuel systems. Gasoline section has carburetor & spark plugs, diesel section has injector pump & injectors. Engine starts on gasoline then is switched to diesel while operating.
car diesel nozzles here (eg irvings in Maine) same size as gas but the TRUCK pumps a lot larger. They are considerably bigger, which means that you can conceivably fill your tank with gas instead.
Begs to ask the question: How big a tank did the 'old truck driver' have? 1:100 or 1:20 mix? Just not worth it. I think I will stick to diesel period.A old truck driver told me to put 1 gal of gas to a tank full of diesel I did this on my tool truck for 10 yrs and had no problems. 20 below it started and ran great all winter I did not use it in summer just in winter.
I second that assessment. If run down to empty, water in the filter could easily have been sucked into the injector pump and that will make it knock and wheeze until flushed and full diesel flow re-established. Happened twice to me- once on truck ( bad fuel gauge) and once on a VW diesel.Sounds like water in the fuel you dumped in the tank. If you still have it in a can shake it up and then pour some into a clear jar and let it settle. If you see layers you probably have water in it. Change your filters, fill up your tank with fresh diesel after you drain it. Add about a half a pint of ATF fluid and fire it up. It should clear up once all the bad fuel is through the injectors.
