Can I Beef Up My Truck for Heavier Payload?

/ Can I Beef Up My Truck for Heavier Payload? #21
Thanks for answers thus far. My truck is a 1998 F150 4WD regular cab long bed. The GVWR is listed at 6050 max and this model F150 with auto comes in at 4400 lbs empty curb weight. That gives me a current 1600 lbs to play with. I would like to haul ~330 gals of water 4 miles....flat no hills. I've been keeping the 1ton decision at bay but expect to take the plunge in a couple of years.

330 gal of water will be 2,640# plus the containers weight.......thats alot to expect from a 1/2 ton. im thinking about the brakes now also.....trying to stop that momentum in a hurry.

Just get a trailer.

I can not believe some of these GVWR packages you guys have. I guess I always order my trucks the way I want them but I have not had a 1/2 ton with less than 7,000# GVWR and a curb weight over 5,600# with me in it ever. This leaves a honest 1,600# or more payload.

I have not had a 3/4 ton in the last 10 years with a GVWR less than 9,900# and the curb weight of them were in the 7,500# range leaving a honest 2,500# payload.

My current 1 ton SRW has 11,500# GVWR and it weight 7,600# again with me in it leaving nearly 4,000# for payload.

Do your research when buying. Just because it says 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton that does not mean squat.

Chris - I can understand your point if one knew clearly what their future needs list was. My own truck needs have changed dramatically since I first purchased the truck 13 yrs ago. I would say not a bad purchase given the utility and longevity for the variety of tasks it has accomplished. No truck is perfect and regardless of size and config they have their limitations....some more than others. My next truck purchase will have a new set of requirements that is drastically different from my needs 13 yrs ago. If I had a crystal ball like some I would be way ahead........Gary

You can try a set of supersprings, I put them on my titan, and they work really well. the can be found by googling supersprings, but they are not cheap. mine cost me $485.00, but I really like them. and they take about 1 hr.
to Install. of course price depends on your make and model.
