Can I burn old oil filters?

My summer project is to cancel trash pickup, recycle everything I can and burn the harmless remainers. Bury the vegetable stuff.
I'm no green weenie, just tired of paying for a guy to pick up a half shopping bag of trash each week.

One of the problem issues is old oil filters and what to do with them.
I wouldn't want to spill old oil on the ground but figure to stand up the drained filter in my burnable trash and light the pile.
Seems the pile burns, the oil and media burns and I can put the remainder metal can in with my metal trash.

Is this a good idea??

Most retailers are required to take them back, as well as your waste oil, for free.

No--none--zero of anything like that in my part of Ohio.
It's all landfill and picked up by contract refuse trucks.
Some townships recycle the basice for two hours one day per month.

If you burn them in a fire, all the residual oil and the inner paper filter will burn to ash, leaving a chunk of recyclable metal no different than an old soup can. Crush it in a vise afterward and you can just colect them for a long time before making a dump run.

Just leave them upturned for a while to drain and throw then in the scrap bin with all the other metal , never had a complaint yet !

They work great in the wood stove in my shop.

You should be aware of the contaminates that are in used diesel oil, before burning the filters. we have to drain and crush ours before recycling them.

I drain as much oil out of them that I can, then place them upside down in my wood stove out in the barn, on top of a well established fire. After they are completely burnt out, I remove them and let them cool in a old aluminum milk pail for a day or so. Then they go in the trash. Not a very good thing to do if you have neighbors close and when the wind is going their way, so plan accordingly. [ no sirens or flashing lights yet...!!! ]

I live in Ohio. Walmart takes old oil, filters and antifreeze. My local dealer I purchased my tractor from also takes back old oil and antifreeze and the filters as well.


I believe Autozone also takes back old oil but not 100% sure.

It's actually easy to get rid of old oil.

That's why I'm thinking of burning them. There are waste oil furnaces everywhere and that seems to be OK.
The issue probably is the attempt to avoid any oil getting onto the ground and contaminating groundwater.
So....if I drain the cannister correctly and then place upright to burn, the oil would burn, not a drop would spill and I could recycle the empty cannister.

That's what I'm thinking and I'm trying to do the right thng.

Heck yes! I do it all the time in my shops hot blast wood burning heater its extra btu's thats how I get rid of them and the case can be put in the trash its a win-win.

Now when I used to burn them in a 55 gallon barrel.... don't let your hired help light a whole barrel of them I am pretty sure the men in the space station saw that mistake.

Fact here is a pile of them right now.

Just be sure you check the law before doing so...Also, I would compost your green waste rather then just burying it...:thumbsup:

I do get a kick out of the green crowd sometimes. Anyone really think there's any difference between burning the litle bit of residual oil in a filter vs an older car that burns oil and burns that much in 10 miles of driving??

They work great in the wood stove in my shop.

Did that for years, Then just throw away the carcass.

i've benn heating my shop that way. i bring all th efilters home from work and throw one in every hour or two. its just like a half a stick of wood.every btu you dont have to pay for the better. i dont even bother to drain them, the more oil the better

What is it in waste oil that's bad? I have read that you shouldn't get waste oil on your skin. Is that why I see more mechanics wearing gloves? Whatever it is does it burn up? Where does it go?

Hi all,

Although I am new to the forum here comes my two bits:

If you leave your filters and old oil for recycling/destruction it will most likely go to a big furnace that burns at a very high temperature. Higher temperature means different burn chemistry and most destruction furnaces are equipped with both catalysts and filters. Your filters and used oil will contain a lot of what in lay terms are called "crap" but for the recycler/destructor are heavy metals that mostly are separated out and recycled and a lot of really nasty poisonous compounds that are converted by high temperatures combined with catalysts to less nasty compunds.
In your average wood furnace or oil drum you will most likely just release all the nasty "crap" from what you burn and it will fall on your own and your neighbors land. If you grow anything on your land that you eat you will then ingest the 田rap and even if this also is a kind of recycling of the "crap" it might not be very healthy.

Please count me into the "green crowd" but last time I counted I only found one earth and my children will need it!!

I'd burn them and get the heat value. Bury the carcass if no recycle to drop it off. Will release more "crap" in the air driving to the recycle than in the burn. IMO
