Can I change hydraulic filter without draining fluid?

One doesn't insert vacuum hose nozzle ""into the oil"" only into the hyd oil reservoir opening therefor only a vacuum is created in reservoir when shop vac is operating not allowing oil to drain out.

I'm gonna need pictures 'cuz that don't make a lick of sense. If I put the nozzle of my 12 gallon shop vac in an opening with fluid even close by, it's gonna suck fluid.

In most tractors, the fluid level is 8-12" lower than the fill hole, as long as you have a loose fit (so it can leak a little), it should be fine.

Not in mine. The fill hole is only a 1/2" or so and the level is less than an inch below the the opening. Dipstick is only an inch long.

I fail to see the need to filter "new oil" before it enters hyd system so I fill all filters when changing that attach upright.
I never filtered new oil neither but if you look at some pump manufacturers they tell you to filter new oil.......Mike

Thanks all for your responses. In my case the fluid is about 6 inches below the fill port so I am going to try the vacuum (with a slight air leak). My John Deere Manual specifically says to prefill the new filter 1/3 to 1/2 full with new fluid. It even shows a picture with a funnel inserted in the center hole of the filter

Lol, AvE is is actually an extremely good engineer & a better tinkerer than most. He's recently purchased a new Haas CNC machine & made it avalible for public use just funded of Patreon donations. Unlike most YouTube stars he hasn't sold out to anybody.

Can you post a video of your 12 gallon shop vac sucking the oil out of hyd reservoir without nozzle touching oil & with hyd filter removed?

For you fellas having trouble with the shop vac concept.
I used this process when I replaced the drain plug on the oil pan of my old 7.3L with a Fumoto valve.
I could see the oil at the opening and it never released a drop.
The shop vac. creates a negative pressure.
I will NOT suck any oil. The negative pressure is sufficient to prevent the product from flowing out a drain hole, filter housing etc.
The shop vac may need some aggie engineering to fit a hyd. oil fill opening but the concept is still valid.
A hose is attached at the opening but NOT inserted all the way in as far as it will go.
The hydraulic fluid is lower then the opening of the fill plug and will not siphon up any fluid.
Easy peasy fellas really.
