Looks an awful lot like Kentucky Blue grass to me

I thought that the main part of his lawn looks like Kentucky Blue; as Aaron said, what he's trying to get rid of has the creeping habit of a fescue.
Because they are both grasses (monocots) anything you spray on the weed may leave a dead spot in the lawn. By using a contact herbicide such as Roundup though, you should be able to replant.

you might try a good broad leaf herbicide, we really like quinclorac. can also use 2-4-d, but it's not always as effective on really stubborn stuff

If it grows fast and tall, we call it johnson grass aroud here.

I neglected to mention this is scattered around two or more acres. That's a lot of digging so it's on my "B" list.

Do you know the active ingredient in this? I'll look into it.

Well, I do think it's a different sort of grass but not 100% sure. There must be a way if you can kill crabgrass? That's no more than a wide grass, isn't it?

I don't think that's crabgrass, the blades are to big, and it is too early in the year for it in Ohio. It sure does look like Johnson grass to me and the only way to get rid of it, said the horticulturalist I was talking about, was to kill it and everything around it, or dig, spray and plant.

Well, here's something that doesn't work. I mixed a strong solution of Roundup and simply wiped a blade of the offending wide bladed grass figuring it would just kill the offending plant. Not so fast.

I did kill the grass but it also killed a bigger circle of grasses including some finer bladed varieties. Maybe it was because the Roundup was really strong or maybe the roots of the good grass were mixed in, I don't know.

**Update on this from the OP. From the comments and suggestions made, I did my homework and used a new herbicide that appears to work on many annoying grassy weeds. It's called "Turf Herbicide" (credit to xring100) and is for grassy and broadleaf weeds. It worked for me but I've only used it for a month.

It has 2,4-D and Dicamba as well as Quinclorac and I little bit of Sulfentrazone. I know 2,4-D but no idea on the others. It kills nutsedge real well. That''s the spikey yellowish grassy weed that spreads underground and is very troublesome in lawns. It also killed some odd and wider bladed grassy stuff and KO'd quackgrass quickly. Some pictures are below. See how the weed died and the surrounding grass lived? That's what I was looking for.
