Will be getting a NH TC40D and wondering what I might need to plant some corn. I'm not sure I'll even cut it, rather plant a strip 50 ft wide by 400 ft long (less than an acre) and leave it standing as a "funnel"/security screen and additional food source for deer. I have two wooded parcels that I'd love to have connected somehow and give security to traveling deer.

How do you plant corn? I will be getting a two bottom plow, discs, hog and FEL, but don't know about a "corn planter attachment"?

You might be able to find a two row tow behind or they also made three point hitch two row planters that you might find at a farm auction for a bargin.

Yea, there are a lot of 2 row corn planters out there, JD 290 & the like. At 40 hp, you could pull an old 4 row unit as well, but you don't have enough land for that to pay. just if you are given an old IH 56 or something, would work too.

On these old plate planters, you need to match your seed corn size to your plate size - flat or round, large or small. Generally plates can be found, but it sure helps to get a box full of different sizes with the planter when you buy it...

Your county may have a planter that you can rent for next to nothing. That is what many do around me.

You can handle a 2 row as pictured below with no problem--We sell a lot of used Ford-JD and Burch planters to guys that are doing exactly what you describe--Ken Sweet

This maybe blasphemy, but. Buying a corn planter, using it, having the headaches from it and wasting money on it would be to much for me to plant no more than you are going to plant. Just plant it by hand and save your money.

Planting corn by hand has got to be slow, backbreaking work. Besides what would he use his TC-40D for? I picked up an old 2 row corn planter for 2 hundred bucks. I use it every year and when I am ready to sell it I'll bet I get my investment back. Can't do any better than that, unless you get one for free that is.

PS It's New Holland blue now, any offers?

It's less that an acre for pity's sake we are not talking the back 40 here. How bad could it be to plant less than an acre, my mother is 82 and she could plant that little. BTW, our garden is over an acre.

From the Farmer prospective, you are quite correct Jerrry. I buy "professional" farm equipment using the same thought process for my 300 acre operation. Today, There aint no money in farming (even if the land is give to you). As a dealer in new and used tractors and farm equipment for over 26 years, I have learned to listen to my customers and thier needs. Many are telling me that they are willing to spend up to 15K to 30K to have a fulfilling hobby that helps refresh the mind and get some relief from the high stress jobs. I had one customer this year purchase a 30K new tractor and related equipment and said he had no intention of producing any agricultural product on his 100 acres. He jokingly said that, in the long run, the cost of the purchase would be cheaper than a Shrink or a Divorce for him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif--Ken Sweet

Well JerryG aren't you full of pee and vinegar today /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I hate to sound unenlightened but I agree with those who say buy a cheap planter for this simple reason: don't neat, clean rows come from a mechanical device, not an 82 year old woman bending over or throwing seeds?? Besides, I have another 35 acres to play with and may want to plant more. Thanks for the information on the used planters, I've marked your website in my favorites list.
