Ken,
That analogy is the only way to make a lot of the things come out here. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well JerryG aren't you full of pee and vinegar today

No I am not.
That was meant as a gee whiz it's only a small plot. My point being that anyone no matter their age could plant an area no larger than that in less time and with less aggravation and most certainly with less money by hand that they could with a plant new or used. BTW she can plant a better row than any planter that I have ever seen.

What about one of those small walk behind wheel type planters? That's kind of in the middle. I use one to plant mine. I could plant it by hand, but I don't have to. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Buy a planter, you never know when you will need to plant more. We bought a very seldom used International 56 4row planter about 3 years ago to plant about 5 acres here. Cost $600. This spring I will be planting 40 acres of silage corn as well as about 5-10 acres for wildlife at our house.

Just pick out the one you like from Ken's web site and order it! My neighbor and I did just this spring with no problems! we planted about 2 acres for food plots for the deer, using his JD 755! We got the cheapest 2 row that fit on a 3pt, and it does the job! It's not pretty, but it works! Sure beats doing it by hand, which we did one year. Now if we can just figure out how to get rid of all the raccoons we get we'll be all set!

This was the first season I had used my JD 2-row corn planter.. it def. makes planting corn easy.. it would take hours to hand plant & fertilize an acre of corn.. now.. 10-15 minutes w/ the planter. I planted an additional acre because I was done so quick.. some for me.. some for the deer & racoons! I got a great deal from a farmer down the road.. a two bottom plow.. and the 2 row planter for $500.. the two bottom plow needed new shims & bolts.. but both have worked great. I'm giving the planter the once over on the off season. Did some firewood work for a dairy farmer next door and he gave me an old two row cultivator and a bent-up 3pt haybale fork. The farmers around me have been my best source for old equipment.. it usually needs some work.. but the old 3pt equipment is usually built pretty tuff. Now if I can just find an old disc set..

Here's a popular walk behind type... ~$70... it works pretty well... different size plates for different size seeds...

I missed a 4 row IHC planter at an auction last fall, it sold for 100 dollars had al lthe plates and the fella who bought it Is using it behind a TC40D to plant sunflowers and corn on his hobby farm. I used to buy them in 4 row units and cut them down into 2 3 point units Ill i found they pulled so easy. What pat of the country are you in i might be ably to help you find one. Also ask a small hobby farmer dads always glad to help and will plant smoe good sized plots for them.
At the landfill we manage after it reopens we may buy another 4 row to make wildlife plots for the EPA. One thing to make sure if you buy a planter make sure you have a fertilizer tank and a seed tank or youll have to fertilze them seperatly.

A general rule of thumb is 10 drawbar horse power per row unit. I think you would be OK up to a four row unit.

Jerry most of us could sell our tractors and use a push mower to save money. Heck, my gradfather used an old rotary mower. But that doesn't make it easier, wiser, or the only choice.

Those that elect to keep their tractors and use them for a purpose other than gathering dust can find a deal or two on a new or used corn planter and set a few corn plants in a minimal amout of time.
