I take it the wrench stayed stuck to the starter sol/hot cross contacts?

Neighbor where I worked (John) had a 80HP tractor with dual rear wheels (wet field) he was off of it. He said he did not remember what he was doing but some how he shorted the starter sol with a wrench (it had been running just prior) so it fired off pretty quick. He was in his late 60's/early70's at time, I the duals went over him from feet to mid chest where it rolled off him. Like you it crushed his hip both legs and ruptured a few internals, he did survive. The tractor which stayed running was turning 60' circles and nearly hitting him on each pass as he was totally immobilized in field. My boss seen the tractor making a pass into his back field and no one in the cab ran down to find him laying and seen the tractor miss him by a foot or less. The path it was taking would have hit hit full on had the box not jumped in and stopped it a few feet shy of John who was not conscious at the time. They were not sure if it had even went over him more than once!!!

Real dangerous, I have had ONE run in a couple of years ago on my Jinma284 myself. I ALWAYS make sure to park it with it OUT of GEAR! I parked tractor in the barn and grabbed the fuel jug & filled it up. taking both jugs to town to fill them up have dinner w woman and spent the night with her at her place. Next day arrived at farm about 10 am. I walked out towards the barn & heard it running! I know it was OFF when I left as I had pulled the key after filling it up with fuel. What had happened was I had wire tied the FEL Hyd QD/Hose up & after 10+ years the Wire Tie broke & the QD fell onto the starer sol/cable starting it up. The QD wedged the starter ON which burnt down the brushes and killed the battery voltages to 0volts as the starter spun. The teeth on the flywheel and starter were OK so Engine must have fired like always on 3rd or 4th rev. kicking the gear off the flywheel. It idled 3 or 4 gallons of fuel out over the time it sat running. It had a NEW oil change the next day or so as it was do but seemed to have no fuel fouling from the extended idle time.

There is a post here in the forum when it happened & was sure glad I always park it with it out of gear :/

Mark, that is a real horror story for sure. This was one of the the odd parts... The wrench fell clear if the solenoid. It's like it latched in internally.

if the battery was low, contacts could have welded.. but then i'd have expected them to stay welded till the bat died, starter died, or it was knocked loose.

that's an odd one for sure, unless the solenoid chose to fail at a very, very inopertune moment.
