Was moving some rocks today when all of a sudden I saw my loader cylinder dangling. Looks like a break at the weld. I am thinking this can just be repaired. Is that the case or do I need to buy a replacement?

Yes, it can be easily repaired by just welding it again.

Clean the old welds with a grinding disc or a flapper wheel, put a good chamfer on the end of the rod. Then put a good weld bead on it.

If you're the one taking the job, make sure you cover the rod as close as possible to the weld so the weld spatter won't damage the chrome.

EDIT: Here are two of four cylinders I built from scratch from when I built my loader. I did a root bead with a 3/32" 6013 rod, then a big/wider bead with 1/8" rod.

Thanks! I will probably have a professional fix it then since I've never welded a single thing in my life.

Any ideas what something like this would cost to get the welding done?

I weld, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to have someone weld it.

Do you have any nearby farmers/neighbors who you can ask to fix it, or show you how?

Or perhaps look into what the part costs to replace, then look at what one wants to fix it, then decide. Just guessing, but say maybe $150.00 to $200.00 to weld it?

Buy a welder, learn how to use it, it's fun and practical.

Should have been much more weld than that. Looks like they didn’t bevel a thing. I would be looking at rewelding the other side also to prevent another break.

It can be re-welded. Cost is hard to say because I don't know what weld shops charge in your area. Before I retired I told customers to bring me clean stuff to weld because I would charge them shop rate to clean their stuff. So save yourself some money and clean the area very well. And, like Alan W. mentioned, have the other rod looked at too. Clean up the other rod area so the welder can get a good look at it. In fact, clean up anything that the welder may need to handle. Welders hate cleaning oil, grease, dirt, and mud from stuff that needs welding.

Other TBN members told me to use oven cleaner to clean a hydraulic line for brazing. I guess you could try that?

Around here, I would do it for "beer money" even though I don't drink all that much. It's a simple weld, like 10/15 minute job just to help someone out, and I would still give you a bag full of whatever fruit I had in excess at the time from my orchards.

In the US, I don't know. Maybe try find a welding shop, fabricator or machinist nearby.

Thanks. I called around and the cheapest I found was $400 for a weld on-site. Probably could have found it cheaper but decided to go with a new cylinder for $485. Plus I'll have spare parts if I have a cylinder failure or I could sell it. Someone might be interested.
