I believe that this would be considered illegal under the rules of NAFTA. The 7% effectively amounts to a export tax. NAFTA is meant to level the playing field.

I think you're right! Good thing two of the three potential Presidential candidates have promised to "adjust" NAFTA! ;) I'm sure that's what they mean to fix! :D

This is the type if thing people are upset with in the tractor market - and it is not just confined to JD. Posters who say "buy another brand" are not presenting a solution. The other brands are just as bad on the pricing side.
I think what may be meant is to "buy another brand" across the border. Are the other manufacturers cracking down or imposing surcharges on cross-border sales, I know Kubota and the warranty issue was mentioned? If they aren't, it probably won't be long. Like someone else said, all the manufacturers would probably like you purchase nearest to your zip code and eliminate all competition. IMO, that's the way it's going with consolidation, bans on price advertising, etc.

If you take this to the extreme, as in his zip code example, I wouldn't like it.

Oh just wait. They will get there.. this is common practice with construction equipment. Infact, this is how CAT runs their whole business, the way they have their "distrubtorships" setup is the envy of all these equipment companies.

I agree with your statement but is there a government willing to challenge JD in NAFTA court?

A few years back when I was shopping for my tractor, I stopped by one dealer a few hours from me, and was told me he would not bother quoting me because he would not sell outside of his area. So this kind of thing is already happening in some regions.

The OP is like the rest of us Canadians and simply sick and tired of paying too much for the same items (tractors, cars, butter or otherwise) than our American friends. We read on the internet about all the "shopping deals" Americans are getting on not just big ticket items but many everyday items as well which we simply don't get up here. Are we getting a little upset? Can you guess?

Looks like potential good news for CDN buyers. The JD website now appears to offer the option of US$$ or CDN$$ pricing and based on base 3320 as an example, adjusted for currency exchange, there is only CDN$$ 286 difference.

More information is usually better information and leads to a more informed purchaser.

I talked to a few US dealers during the week and they we not happy with the move by JD to charge the 7% surcharge to Canadians wanting to buy in the US. They all agreed that it would drive some buyers to buy other brands.

If the $286CDN were the only difference I would say that's "potential good news", but I have a feeling the "real price" difference would be greater than that amount because of other factors, and the 7% surcharge is meant to discourage cross-border competition.

The price difference really becomes serious when you add loaders and backhoes. MSRP $US 7200 vs $CAD 8280 for the basic 447 backhoe for example. ( Did I see somewhere that the backhoes -maybe it was loaders- are made in Ontario?) I was quoted $US 6000 installed by a US dealer.

We will se how the Canadian dealers respond to the pricing being available on line.
